United is currently running an unannounced award sale. Per this FlyerTalk thread, you'll receive 20% off domestic roundtrip saver economy class awards, including Alaska and Hawaii. Full terms and conditions are unclear, but it seems that travel dates from late August to mid-December are eligible for this promotion with some black-out dates sprinkled in. This sale is not valid for first-class awards or standard level awards.
As a result of this deal, you can book domestic roundtrip economy class awards within the contiguous 48 for only 20,000 miles instead of the usual rate of 25,000 miles:
For itineraries 700 miles or less each way, such as LAX-SFO, the roundtrip award rate is only 16,000 miles:
Additionally, roundtrip economy class awards to Alaska can be booked for 28,000 miles instead of 35,000 miles and roundtrip economy class awards to Hawaii can be booked for 36,000 miles instead of 45,000 miles.
While redeeming United miles for domestic roundtrip economy-class awards may not be the most luxurious use of miles, at the rates above, it makes opens up additional options at better prices, particularly if the paid fare is excessive.
Keep in mind that United is an Ultimate Rewards transfer partner, so if you are short of the miles required to take advantage of this sale, you can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to United instantly at a one-to-one ratio in 1,000-point increments.
