Buying miles can sometimes make sense, especially if it leads to significant savings on flights. However, you’ll want to crunch the numbers before making a purchase.

When Should You Buy Points and Miles?
Our frequent AwardWallet readers are probably thinking to themselves, “These guys sound like a broken record!” when it comes to our stance on buying points and miles. But we feel it's worth mentioning again that we are not proponents of buying points and miles, at least without a plan. Even when an airline is offering a bonus or discount promotion, you shouldn't immediately reach for your wallet.
Instead, we prefer to earn miles and points organically. For most loyalty programs, you're better off growing your balance through top credit card offers and leveraging transfer partners.
Having said that, there are only two real reasons why someone should purchase miles. The first is if you can grab an award ticket by buying the necessary miles at a cheaper rate than the cash price. Secondly, if you're close to topping off your balance to grab a sweet redemption, purchasing those last few miles might be the quickest (and simplest) way of reaching your goal.
Make sure that you're always doing the calculations before buying miles or points to ensure you're getting the best value from the transaction.
Buy Garuda Miles Promotion Details
- This promotion is valid until June 21, 2025.
- Members can purchase GarudaMiles in increments of 1,000.
- Members can take advantage of the “Buy Miles” feature with a maximum purchase amount of 250,000 GarudaMiles per year (before the bonus).
- The base price of GarudaMiles is $21.50 for every 1,000 miles.
- Purchased GarudaMiles are non-refundable and non-transferable, and cannot be used to determine GarudaMiles membership tier.

Since this is the third promotion we've seen from Garuda for buying GarudaMiles, we don't have much of a history to compare to determine where this falls in Garuda's buy-miles spectrum. But what we do know about this promotion is that the per-mile rate (1.075¢ each) is much cheaper than the baseline rate of GarudaMiles (2.15¢ each).
How To Buy Garuda Indonesia GarudaMiles
Head on over to the Garuda Indonesia buy miles portal to get started. Once there, you can scroll down until you find the dropdown menu on how many GarudaMiles you would like to purchase. You can buy up to 150,000 GarudaMiles (before a bonus) at any time.
Once you select the number of GarudaMiles you want, make sure to check the terms and conditions box and then click the “Buy Miles” button to proceed with your order.
While you can purchase up to 150,000 miles in a single transaction, you can purchase up to 250,000 GarudaMiles per year (before the bonus). So, you can make multiple transactions if you need more miles.
How to Redeem Your GarudaMiles
Now that you've purchased your GarudaMiles, it's time to redeem them! You can head over to the redemption portal and select which method you'd like to redeem them for.
You can redeem GarudaMiles for a wide array of options, including flights and hotels, donations to charitable causes, shopping in one of the many shopping centers or catalogs on offer from Garuda, food & beverage, sustainability, and even redeem your miles for PCR Swab and Antigen Test Services (still!)
Other Ways to Earn Garuda Indonesia Airline Miles
As with most other airlines, credit card spending has been the traditionally easy way to earn GarudaMiles — even for U.S. residents. But since Citi ThankYou Rewards removed GarudaMiles as a transfer partner in 2019, it's not been possible to transfer miles to GarudaMiles in the U.S.
So, if you are a resident of Indonesia, you should focus on earning points for your everyday spending with any of these cards: Garuda BNI Visa Signature Credit Card, Garuda Indonesia Citi Card, and the Mandiri Garuda Debit Card.
Another easy path to earning GarudaMiles is through eligible bookings on Garuda Indonesia flights! Just make sure that when you do book a Garuda flight, your GarudaMiles number is entered into the passenger information field. It will usually take around 7 days after the flight is complete to receive the miles into your account. What's cool about Garuda, is you can claim any missing miles retroactively within 6 months after the flight date by using the app or website to follow the prompts for claiming missing miles.
Another way to earn GarudaMiles is through paid airfare from SkyTeam Airlines to Garuda Indonesia. This includes flights paid on Air France & KLM Flying Blue, Delta, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic, and many more.
Lastly, you can accrue GarudaMiles when you book a stay at one of the many hotel partners that Garuda is partnered with. The two main giants that Garuda has connections with are Accor ALL and Hilton Honors.
Final Thoughts
This 100% bonus is the third of (hopefully) many more promotions to come in 2025 from the Indonesian giant. For now, you can grab Garuda Indonesia GarudaMiles for the rate of 1.075¢ apiece and hope that another promotion rolls around that will give us a 1.43¢ per-mile value or better in the future. This deal is on the table through June 21, 2025.
