The Chase Freedom® 5% cash back categories for July to September, 2019 are gas stations and select streaming services. The deadline to activate these categories is September 14, 2019. Unlike some of its rotating-category competitors, the Freedom Card will give you retroactive credit for qualifying purchases made before you activate the bonus category—as long as you register before the deadline.

Key Terms

  • Activate your 5% categories by September 14, 2019
  • Eligible purchases that post to your account between July 1 and September 30, 2019, are eligible for the bonus
  • Earn 5% cash back on the first $1,500 of spending (max $75 cash back), earn 1% after that.
  • The promotion is valid at gas stations and select streaming services.

As mentioned above, as long as you make the September 14th deadline, you'll earn 5% cash back for all purchases for the entire quarter (up to $1,500), no matter when you activate. You can see the official Chase Freedom FAQ page for more details on activating and earning your cash back.

Select Streaming Services

Although the additional category isn't likely to make or break your quest to max out the $1,500 limit on 5% cash back, streaming services is a nice addition—especially with services that offer a discount when you pay annually. Chase lists the following merchants as eligible for the 5% bonus cash back:

  • Netflix
  • Hulu
  • Sling
  • Vudu
  • Fubo TV
  • Apple Music
  • SiriusXM
  • Pandora
  • Spotify

Activating Your Bonus

Fortunately, this part is incredibly easy; just enter your last name, zip code and the last 4 digits on your card on Chase's activation page.

Our Take

With the recent gas-tax increase that took effect on July 1st in five different states, the current bonus category is well-timed. Summer is a great time for road trips, and now Chase Freedom® cardholders will get a significant return on their fuel purchases. One of our favorite things about gas stations is that they offer plentiful opportunities for bonus stacking—the art of earning rewards from multiple sources on a single purchase.

For folks that don't spend much on gas, this is still a great category because it is easy to find gift cards for other merchants you frequently shop with at your local station.

Although 5% cash back is great, 5X Ultimate Rewards is even better. If you have a premium Chase card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, or the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, you can move the points earned on the Freedom Card to one of these accounts and unlock the ability to transfer your Ultimate Rewards to travel partners.

  • I need to find a gas station that sells VGCs/MCGCs by credit card in SoCal. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Yes CA taxes on gas are in effect so whatever I can get back I will be happy for. Thanks for the tip

  • Gas stations near me sell gcs, so this quarter is in the bag.

  • I love the twice a year gas bonus on the Freedom.

  • RoseMarie says:

Always nice to get extra Ultimate Reward points.

  • I do love my Freedom bonuses! I do agree that I won’t be maxing out the bonus this time. I bet they’ll have department stores in the next quarter. I can see that being a good one for the holidays. Maybe transportation?
I maxed out the last one and loved seeing my total go up.

  • Looks like it’s time to gas up and get some easy points

  • Chase Freedom is a hidden gem.

  • Maryjane says:

I just finished my big road trip for the summer so I didn’t get to take advantage. My freedom card now has 10% back on Vudu so I might sign up for that.

  • That’s a generous cashback bonus at 5%, after all who doesn’t need to buy gas and groceries. Plus the 1% on everything else.

  • I’ve been using the Chase Freedom for years! Love the 5% back!

  • Streaming services is such a joke category

  • Any suggestions on gas stations that sell gift cards? There’s no way I’m going to buy $500/month of gas, but I could easily max this out if I can find a place that sells gift cards that qualifies.

  • Ugh this is a tough one to max out in the LA area. Almost impossible to find a gas station that sells GC on credit. 7-11’s on credit have been dead for years out there.

  • These are great categories ! Take to rack up some points! Thanks Chase.

  • Sunny Huang says:

If you preferred Shell, consider signing up an account at and get additional 0.03 and up saving per gallon. If 76 is your thing, linking your credit using their mobile app might save you 0.1 per gallon. I know it is not much per gallon, but it definitely adds up in the long run.

  • 7/11s post as gas for Chase cards?

  • Freedom is my favorite card. Awardwallet is my favorite blog.

  • Looks like time to gas up the car

  • Stacy Y Liu says:

With the new increase in gas prices this will definitely be worth it for this q3! Definite incentive!

  • Caroline says:

Freedom is one of my favorite cards to use. Almost every gas station near me in Florida requires cash to buy gift cards. I love that many of the streaming services are unique in what they offer. I subscribe to five of them on the list. Thanks for the info!

  • Andrew I. says:

Gas prices in California is always on the high side, any rebate/discount helps.

  • Thanks for the tip. I love Chase Freedom.

  • I prefer gas stations twice a year over some of the other offers.

  • Retroactive feature is a nice touch for busy folk

  • Chase Freedom is good, but a little disappointed with some of the categories they’ve been offering of late. To me, the best is a category that you’ll use as much of the limit ($1500) without having to “try” and spend more to teach it. Getting $1500 (or even over $500) on streaming services and gas in 3 months is a bit tough unless you drive a LOT and subscribe to several services.

I think it’s good to have Chase and another one for some diversity. You just have to keep track of which card offers which cash back. Discover is offering 5% off for Restaurants this summer (up to $1500, which at 5% is $75). I guess the value of that depends on how much you eat out. Discover also has 5% for Oct-Dec on, and Target. Not bad. Let’s see what Chase serves up for those 3 months.

    • Yeah I miss those 5% quarters where all you had to do was to use contactless payment and/or PayPal 🙁

I don’t use anywhere close to $1500 in terms of gas and streaming services. Chase Freedom has pretty much become just a 1% card for me.

5X Ultimate Rewards is the real deal here for the travel partners.
