This promotion has ended, however, you can check out the Current Chase Quarterly Bonus promo.
You can now register for the Chase Freedom 5% category bonus for Q1 2018. Bonus categories for Q1 2018 include gas stations, internet, cable, phone services, and for the first time, and far more interestingly, purchases made through a mobile wallet.
Mobile wallet transactions include purchases made via Chase Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Android Pay. As usual with the Chase Freedom®promo, the quarterly bonus is only eligible for the first $1,500 of spending, which would earn you $75 in cash back during the promo.
- You need to activate 5% cash back by March 14, 2018
- Promo is valid on purchases from January 1 through March 31, 2018
- The 5% earning is valid on the first $1,500 of purchases
- Promo is valid at Gas stations and Internet, Cable, and Phone providers
- Promo is valid when using the Freedom Card in conjunction with Chase Pay, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Android Pay
How To Activate 5% Cash Back
Activating your cash back is easy, and while we wish it were automatic, it is only a few clicks. Head to 5% cash back activation page, enter your last name, the last four digits of your card number, and your zip code.
Which Merchants Are Eligible For 5% Cash Back
The full list of eligible merchants covers both national and local gas station brands as you'd expect. With internet, cable, and phone services merchants there are several on the list that we wouldn't have expected including:
None of these are internet providers, but rather content providers that all have subscription services. Perhaps this is a way for Chase to get you to switch your recurring charge to your Freedom Card.
Without a shadow of a doubt the real star of the quarter is the mobile wallet payments. Essentially this means that as long as a retailer accepts mobile wallet payments, you can earn 5% on any transaction regardless of category. This is a game changer for anyone that would otherwise not be able to maximize the 5% cash back across the other categories. The introduction of mobile wallet payments means you should be easily able to maximize the promo this quarter and earn $75 back for $1,500 spending.
With the average American household spending $1,074 per year or $268.5 per quarter on mobile cellular services, and $1,909 per year or $477.25 per quarter on gas, it would have been very difficult to maximize the promotion this quarter, unless you spend significantly more on these categories than average.
Introducing mobile wallet payments allows Freedom Card cardholders to maximize this quarter’s promo since you can earn 5% cash back using mobile wallet payments regardless of category. Remember, if you've got other Chase Ultimate Rewards earning credit cards you can combine the rewards on your Freedom Card with others which include the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card to maximize the value of your rewards.
