If you live in California and you want unlimited BOGO (Buy One Get One) flights you are in luck! Southwest has released a promo, which will give you the Southwest companion pass after opening a new Southwest credit card account and spending $1,000 during the first three months of card membership. However, as is always the case with these super generous offers, there are some terms and conditions.
Key Terms
- You must open your Rapid Rewards credit card account by November 30, 2017
- Promo is only open to those who have a California address on their credit card application
- You can only apply if you have received a targeted email from Southwest with the promotion
- Offer is not valid for current holders of any Rapid Rewards credit cards
- Offer is not valid if you have held a Rapid Rewards credit card, and have received a signup bonus in the last 24 months
- Allow 15 days from qualifying for the Companion Pass to receive your notification from Southwest and nominate your desired companion
- Companion pass will be valid through December 31, 2018
The Chase Rules at Work
One possible hiccup with this offer is the Chase 5/24 rule. Since Chase issues Southwest co-branded credit cards, you may find that although you may qualify on every criterion for the card, you may fall foul of Chase’s 5/24 rule. If you have opened more than 5 credit cards in the last 24 months, you could struggle to get approved for the Southwest card.
Overall
Earning the Southwest companion pass can sometimes be relatively easy to achieve, however, with this promotion it is about as easy as it gets to pick one up. Any guesses if we'll see Southwest expand elsewhere with this promo?

Companion pass is great. Been using it ever few months and also using points to pay as little as possible. They should offer to all US residents IMO Only wish they had not closed loop hole on hotel pts.
Fortunately, my companion lives in CA, so it’s her turn to pursue the perk and I’ll get to ride along. It’s usually the other way around.
This is a fantastic offer for those who live in California.
Lucky Californians! This is a great promo!
First time I ever wished I lived in in California. What a great offer
Hoping they open up the offer to all Californians and not just to those receiving an e-mail. SW must be concerned about the upcoming Alaska-Virgin Air merger when it finalizes in April. I’m not sure which carrier will win.
Wish I was still a CA resident. I’d be all over this like white on rice!
Wow is right! I’m going to press my son to see if he got this in his email. What a great deal for a 20-something who can fly around at half the price w/ his friends.
application is in
This is to only Californians peoples?
As the post says, yes.
Lucky Californians 🙂
I wish NY residents would get this offer as well. Have been fighting to get the Companion Pass for a while now
was targetted for this offer but I’m way past 5/24 🙁
bummer! 🙁
I’m not in California, otherwise I’d be all over this amazing deal
Do they do this every year for a different state each time?
Hah, we wish! That would be sweet if they did, but no, they don’t do this.
I’ll have to look to see if I got this email. I’m in CA.
Wow! Just Wow!
Good for Californians
I wish I lived in CA for this promo.
Lucky CA residents!
A great deal! My wife and I have the CP, but it ends December 31st and we won’t qualify for renewal. My wife doesn’t think she can get TWO SWA cards, one Business, one personal, for 2018. But we got good use out of the Pass. I had got the Pass mostly through 2 SWA credit cards, but can’t do that again. If you are under 5/24 and are in Cali I’d jump on this deal!
For Companion Pass flights, can the purchased ticket be paid with points?
Yes!
Targetted offer only. I realize that you note this in the article, but it really should be in the title.
Apparently now open to all CA residents, with or without targeted email.
