Ethiopian Airlines is currently offering passengers bonus points to the tune of 5 miles per hour when you fly Ethiopian Airlines to Ethiopia and stay at least a week in the country. This is very similar to Emirates' recent promotion for Dubai, although not quite as good as the “mile a minute” in that promotion.

Here are the details.

Ethiopian Airlines Bonus Points: 5 Bonus Miles Per Hour

Fly with Ethiopian Airlines to Ethiopia before the end of January 2022 to receive bonus points in this promotion. You'll receive 5 bonus ShebaMiles for every hour you spend in the country. You must stay for a minimum of 1 week. If you stay the minimum time required, this would net you 840 miles. This promotion ends January 31, 2022. If your return flight is after January 31, 2022, you will receive bonus miles until midnight of the 31st.

Terms and Conditions

  • Members must have a ShebaMiles account registered on their reservation to qualify.
  • Return flights booked between December 6, 2021 and January 31, 2022 with travel dates between January 1 and January 31, 2022 are valid.
  • Flights leaving Ethiopia after January 31, 2022 are possible, but you will only receive the bonus miles through midnight local time on January 31.
  • Tickets must have an Ethiopian Airlines e-ticket prefix of 071.
  • Award flights and one-way tickets are not valid.
  • Bonus miles don't count toward elite status qualification.

Other Ethiopian Airlines Promotions

There are two additional promotions you could take advantage of before the end of January 2022:

  • Fly between Addis Ababa and Dar Es Salaam any time in January 2022 and receive 1,000 bonus ShebaMiles.
  • Fly between Addis Ababa and Vienna on January 16, 23, or 30 and receive 1,000 bonus ShebaMiles.

Our Take

This is a nice promotion to help boost travel back to Ethiopia, running with the hashtag #GreatEthiopianHomeComing. If you're thinking of traveling to Africa in the near future, perhaps you can take advantage of this offer. Ethiopian Airlines is part of the Star Alliance, so you can use your bonus points from ShebaMiles on any partner airline.

Also, if you've already earned Platinum, Gold, or Silver elite status with Ethiopian Airlines, your status has been extended until December 31, 2022.

Will you be flying to Ethiopia to take advantage of this promotion to get at least 840 ShebaMiles?

  • A word of caution . . . its been all over the news for the past year, but Ethiopia is in the middle of a civil war and the entire country including Addis Ababa has been becoming increasingly more dangerous over time.
Then again, I am the kind of traveler who likes to go where everyone has gone before and is still giving good reviews. I don’t look to actually “discover” where no one else will go.
On a positive note – Ethiopia’s central government recently made a peace overture to the other side for the first time in the civil war. IF a LASTING truce is made, then Ethiopia goes back on my bucket list.
