What Can I Do with Avianca LifeMiles?
Avianca has a well-developed award program with some great sweet spots. As a Star Alliance member, Avianca's network of partner airlines present some of the highest-value redemptions. Some of the best value options include:
- From the US to Europe, one way in first class for 87,000 miles.
- From the US to Europe, one way in business class for 60,000 miles.
- From the US to the Middle East, one way in business class for 78,000 miles.
- From Australia & New Zealand to North Asia, one way in business class for 50,000 miles.
Should You Transfer Citi Points with this Bonus?
In general, planning transfers around these limited-time bonus offers is one of the best ways to maximize your value. But Avianca presents a unique dilemma because of how cheaply you can purchase miles. Historically, LifeMiles has been quite generous (and consistent) with buy-miles promotions that offer a bonus between 125% and 145% multiple times each year. If you buy miles during one of these sales, your total cost per mile can be as low as 1.35 cents.
While it will always be cheaper (in the short term) to transfer points from a program like Citi ThankYou Rewards, the fact that Avianca miles can be purchased at such a low cost, means that you might be better off buying these miles and saving your Citi ThankYou points for a partner that makes it far more expensive to buy miles. For example, Air France/KLM FlyingBlue sells miles at a rate of 55 EUR for 2,000 miles, and rarely offers discounts. At current exchange rates, you'd be looking at roughly 3 cents per mile.
Of course, this is all a moot point if you need miles for an immediate award. The most recent Avianca buy-miles sale ended on November 12th, and the list price of over 3 cents per LifeMile won't be a good value.
While 25% is not the biggest bonus we have ever seen, it can stretch the value of your Citi ThankYou points if you're ready to book right away. However, with Black Friday around the corner, anyone who won't be booking immediately would do well to wait until the end of this promo to decide on a course of action.
