Aeroplan announced a promotion where you will receive a 35% bonus on Marriott Rewards transfers to Aeroplan. If you want to take advantage of this promotion, you will have to hurry since it only runs through September 17, 2018.

Key Terms

  • The promotion is valid for transfers through September 17, 2018, 11:59 PM EDT
  • Receive a 35% bonus on transfers
  • The promotion does not apply to points transferred via a Marriott Rewards Hotel + Air Travel package
  • Allow 4-6 weeks for the points to post to your account

Maximizing The Transfer

Currently, you can transfer Marriott points to Aeroplan at a ratio of 3:1. Transferring 30,000 points would yield 10,000 Aeroplan miles. However, Marriott offers a bonus of 5,000 miles when you transfer 60,000 points, so transferring 60,000 points would give you 25,000 miles. This works out as a ratio of 2.4:1.

If you are going to take advantage of the promotion, transferring 60,000 points would give you 33,750 Aeroplan miles. This works out at a ratio of 1.77:1. When compared to the standard ratio, or the improved ratio (with the 60,000-point transfer), this still represents pretty decent value for your Marriott points.

Our Take

If you have a specific redemption in mind with Air Canada or one of its Star Alliance partners, this promotion could be worth some serious thought. Remember if you have some unconfirmed travel plans it is always worth checking out some of Aeroplan’s sweet spots. With some proper planning, you can sidestep some fuel surcharges and more.

  • The email from Aeroplan is quite sneaky IMO. It says that you get an extra 5,000 miles for transferring 60K Marriott points. Which of course you do… you always have done for SPG transfers… but it does imply that it is part of the Aeroplan promo rather than standard procedure…

  • This promotion end date comes a bit too early for me. There’s a chance that I could use those Aeroplan points, but it’s still speculation. I’d much rather keep them in my Starriot Account as flexible points than turn them into Aeroplan points but then have my plan fall through. Maybe next time.

  • Aeroplan is a dead program…
    I’ll pass.

    • What? Not even mildly the case. Aeroplan is alive and strong — I’ve redeemed over 1,000,000 miles with them for friends/family and received great value.

      • Hey Howie,

Please explain how you get great value out of Aeroplan. I find it the worse milage program I have ever used this far…plus AirCanada is giving up on it.

    • Aeroplan won’t be owned by Aeroplan in two years time or so, rather AC are taking it back under their control. What they do with the program remains to be seen.

  • Transferring points would set back my expiry-timer too, correct?
