IHG and United Bonus Miles Promotion

Through April 30, 2023, members of United MileagePlus can link their accounts to their IHG Rewards account and earn double miles, up to a total of 15,000 bonus miles.

In order to take advantage of this promotion, change your earning preference to “Airline Miles” in your IHG account's “preferences” section. Then select “United Airlines MileagePlus” as your preferred airline.

Before making a booking, register for this promotion. Once registered, book a stay of any length at any participating IHG property before April 30, 2023. You must complete your stay before June 30, 2023. You will earn double miles on your stays, up to a total of 15,000 bonus miles.

IHG stays generally give 2 miles per dollar spent. The exceptions are Candlewood Suites and Staybridge Suites, which have a base rate of 1 mile per dollar spent. Thus, this promotion gives United MileagePlus members 4 miles per dollar spent at IHG properties through June 30, 2023, or 2 miles per dollar at Candlewood Suites and Staybridge Suites.

Key terms:

  • The promotion runs through April 30, 2023.

  • Allow up to 6 weeks for bonus miles to post.
  • Full terms are available here.

Our Take

Earning double United miles on IHG hotel stays could be a better option than earning your IHG points. Some members might value IHG points more than miles. However, if you have some IHG stays coming up and would prefer to earn United miles instead, it could be worthwhile. It just comes down to how you value your points.

For reference, AwardWallet user redemption data shows United miles to be worth an average of 1.78¢ each and IHG points to be worth 0.69¢ each.

To summarize this promotion, you could earn up to 15,000 bonus United miles on IHG stays through June 30, 2023. Just remember to register and book before April 30, 2023.

This promotion should stack with other promotions, such as the opportunity to earn 2,000 points every two nights for stays through April 14, 2023.

  • I like this but only if I really stay at an IHG hotel often, otherwise it’s not worth it. I would love to earn some bonus miles with United but I don’t stay enough to really make this worth it.

  • How do you calculate your award wallet redemption rate to get to a 2.65c per mile valuation? I find United’s points to be consistently worth well under 2c when flying united metal due to their change to dynamic pricing. Possible exception is flying international business class on a star alliance partner where the point amounts are still fixed and the cash price is high.

  • Interesting. I wish I was going to stay somewhere. I could use some more United miles. Since I am planning a trip and need the UA miles this is a valuable promo to me. I won’t stay anywhere just to get this though.

  • 1,000 United miles gets you nowhere. Maybe 5000 would actually entice me to stay at IHG.

  • This is an excellent promotion, other major players should follow

  • There was a deal once where you got both United miles and IHG points for every stay. I guess that is not the case this time. Unless IHG is my only option, I prefer other hotel chains and earning my United points via Chase Ultimate Rewards. Its a decent deal for those who have no other choice of hotels though and can book the flexible rate with Other People’s Money.

  • It looks exiting at first glance to get 1,000 bonus miles, but when you look at the detail as pointed out in the article it is probably not worth it. IHG is my back up to Hilton, so I’m happy enough just to stick to earning IHG points and booking at the cheapest rate.

    Excellent blog post!

  • It’ san excellent new. So important to collect bonus.

  • This does not seem to be a good promo. You are actually paying for the miles that you would be getting since you have to pay for the highest hotel rate.

  • United MileagePlus bonus miles will be awarded to your MileagePlus account within 4-6 weeks : normally it’s such headache to follow up about whether those miles was correctly deposited or not. It’s much simple & hassle-free to receive IHG points rather than miles for stays.

  • Excellent information to take into account. This type of news are really useful, specially now the my UA mileage does not expire! thanks!

  • The restrictive offer is only good for topping up your own MileagePlus account.

  • Sounds like way too many hoops to jump through and rules to remember to be woth it.

  • Definitely not a great value here. Would rather have the IHG points even though they aren’t the best.

  • Seems like too much work for 1000 points. Also switching the earning means you won’t get IHG points which usually gives you pretty bad earning rates.
