In 2021, Emirates and Azul Linhas Aereas Brasileiras (or “Azul” for short) inked a codeshare partnership offering connectivity to and from a handful of cities in Brazil. Now, the venture is taking another step forward, and its fruits will bear new opportunities for Emirates Skywards and TudoAzul members to earn and redeem miles on flights operated by both carriers.<\/p>\n

Here's what you need to know about this partnership.<\/p>\n

Emirates and Azul Expand Partnership<\/span><\/h2>\n

The expansion of the partnership<\/a> between Azul and Emirates will bring about new opportunities to earn and burn miles. Let's break down the important pieces.<\/p>\n

Earning miles<\/span><\/h3>\n

Of the two loyalty programs, Emirates Skywards offers the most utility. While earning rates across both programs are similar (for Azul flights credited to Skywards and vice versa), Emirates Skywards will generally go further than TudoAzul points.<\/p>\n

As a Skywards member traveling on an Azul flight, you'll earn up to 1 mile per mile flown in economy and up to 1.5 miles per mile flown in business class. The exact number of miles you'll earn is broken down even further, shown in the table below.<\/p>\n

Or, if you're crediting Emirates flights to TudoAzul, you'll also earn mileage based on the class of travel, fare type, and distance flown. You can find Azul's earning chart for Emirates-operated flights below:<\/p>\n

There's nothing too out of the ordinary in either chart. But again, there's substantially more utility to crediting flights to Emirates than Azul, mainly because of what you can do with Skywards compared to TudoAzul points.<\/p>\n

Redeeming miles<\/span><\/h3>\n

The cost for Emirates Skywards redemptions for Azul flights will slot right into Emirates' recently-devalued partner award chart<\/a>. At a minimum, this means short-haul Azul awards start at 8,500 Skywards in economy and 17,500 miles in business class.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, if you want to try the carrier's long-haul product, you should be able to book an award for the 4,900-mile journey between Viracopos\/S\u00e3o Paulo (VCP) to Lisbon (LIS) for 38,000 Skywards in economy and 92,500 in business class. At the time of writing, Azul awards weren't yet bookable with Skywards, but this functionality should be rolled out over the coming days.<\/p>\n

The press release also teased that TudoAzul members could redeem points for Emirates flights across Emirates' entire network. It remains to be seen what the award rates are, or when the functionality to redeem will go live. But, like Emirates, this should go online relatively soon. Hopefully, an award chart follows, but that would be out of the norm for Azul, which doesn't routinely publish award charts \u2014 just “starting at” pricing. And even then, it's kind of quirky and convoluted.<\/p>\n

Azul hasn't published much on its expanded partnership with Emirates. Outside of a landing page<\/a> when you try to book a flight to Dubai, there's little-to-no mention of a partnership with Emirates on its website. Strange.<\/p>\n

Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h2>\n

Emirates and Azul have opted to grow their partnership, making flying more rewarding and announcing new redemption opportunities to follow. Unfortunately, it's not yet possible to book awards for flights on either carrier. However, we do know what awards should cost when denominated in Skywards miles. However, we can't say the same for Azul (yet). Still, this development is exciting, and it's always a good day when there's a new way to earn and redeem points and miles.<\/p>\n
