modest welcome offer. While this isn't much of a surprise on a card levying just a $95 annual fee, many premium Amex cards will offer drastically higher welcome bonuses.

New card members can earn 15,000 bonus Membership Rewards points after you use your new Card to make $2,000 in purchases in your first 6 months. By using this card for everyday purchases, which is what this card incentivizes you to do, this spending threshold should be easy to reach. The everyday earning potential of this card is the real selling point, though — not the welcome offer.

The card also offers an introductory APR of 0% on purchases for 12 months and 0% on balance transfers for 12 months. Balance transfers must be submitted within 60 days of account opening to enjoy this introductory offer. There is a balance transfer fee, however: $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater. After the introductory period, you will have a Variable APR of 18.24% - 28.24%.

Amex EveryDay Preferred Benefits

The Amex EveryDay Preferred comes with modest benefits as well. These are fairly standard on most cards in the Amex portfolio. They are as follows:

Access to Amex Offers: These targeted offers can provide bonus points or cash back when you enroll for an offer and then shop with the participating merchant. Available offers change regularly.

Global Assist® Hotline: When you're more than 100 miles from home, have access to 24/7 emergency assistance and coordination services. While the coordination and assistance services are offered at no additional charge from American Express, the services charged by third-party providers typically are not free.

Return protection: Receive up to $300 per occurrence (up to $1,000 per year) when you try to return an eligible item within 90 days from the date of purchase and the merchant won't take it back.

American Express Experiences: Exclusive access to ticket presales and member-only events, such as Broadway shows, concert tours, family and sporting events, and more. For more information, visit americanexpress.com/entertainment.

ShopRunner membership: Get a complimentary membership for free two-day shipping at over 100 different stores. You'll need to enroll in this benefit.

Secondary car rental loss and damage insurance: Pay for your vehicle with this card and decline the rental agency's insurance to be covered for theft or damage to a rental vehicle. Note that this is secondary insurance, which means it kicks in after any other existing coverage you may have (such as your personal auto insurance policy).

These are nothing special to write home about and should not be a major factor in deciding whether to get this card or not.

Amex EveryDay Preferred Earning Rates

The Amex EveryDay Preferred has useful everyday bonus categories, earning as follows:

3X points at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year (then 1X)

2X points at U.S. gas stations

1 point per dollar on all other purchases

Use your card 30 or more times on purchases in a billing period and earn 50% extra points on those purchases less returns and credits.

Credit: Blake Wisz/Unsplash</enter>

Earn 50% extra points each month

The best feature of this card is that it rewards you for using it frequently. If you use your card 30 or more times on purchases in a billing period, you will earn 50% extra points on all purchases for that billing period, minus returns and credits. This puts your point earnings as follows, assuming you qualify for the 50% bonus:

4.5x Membership Rewards points at U.S. Supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per year (then 1x)

3x Membership Rewards points at U.S. Gas Stations

1.5x Membership Rewards points on all other purchases

It is definitely in your best interest to hit this benchmark every billing period, as these are very good earning rates for a card with a mid-range annual fee. Membership Rewards are one of our favorite and most valuable flexible rewards currencies, especially if you take advantage of Amex's hotel and airline partners. Transferring to partners is far and away the best option, with almost all other instances providing poor value. For context on what represents a good use of your points, AwardWallet users have averaged 2¢ per point on Amex point redemptions with transfer partners.

Transfer to partners

The ability to transfer points to partners can provide huge value. You can transfer to 17 airlines — such as Delta, British Airways, and Singapore Airlines — as well as three hotel partners, including Choice, Hilton, and Marriott Bonvoy. Plus, you can take advantage of multiple transfer bonuses with different partners offered throughout the year to boost your returns and target higher-end redemptions, like a round-trip business class ticket to Europe.

However, not all transfer partners offer good value. For example, transfers to Marriott Bonvoy can represent a poor use of your points and should be avoided unless necessary — such as topping off a balance for a redemption. Consult our points and miles valuation guide to help determine whether transfer partners work for you.

For each conversion of points into a U.S. airline frequent flyer program, a fee of $0.0006 per point (with a maximum fee of $99) will be charged to your card account.

Amex Travel

It's also possible to redeem your points within the Amex Travel portal. You can use your points for flights, hotels, rental cars, or cruises. However, this often does not offer the best value. Amex tends to undervalue its own points within the portal and will usually give you a value of less than one cent per point for your bookings.
