If you want more time on rides and less waiting around in line, Lightning Lane is your friend. But before you hand over the money for it, there are a few things you need to know.

Here's how Lightning Lane works, what it costs, and whether it's worth it.

What Is Disney's Lightning Lane?

Lightning Lane is Disney's paid line-skipping service at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. It works a lot like the former FastPass and now-retired Genie+ programs, except this one comes with a cost.

Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World. You'll need the Disney mobile app to use it. There you can reserve return times for select attractions with each eligible attraction available once per day.

Lightning Lane prices fluctuate based on expected crowd levels.

At Disney World, the price varies by park and whether you're park hopping. Recent Disney World Multi Pass pricing has generally ranged from around $19 to $45 per person, per day, but Disney only displays official prices in the My Disney Experience app up to 21 days in advance.

At Disneyland, Lightning Lane prices start at $34 per person per day.

Lightning Lane Single Pass

Some of Disney's popular rides aren't included with Lightning Lane Multi Pass. Instead, you'll need Lightning Lane Single Pass. This pass lets you buy access to Disney's most in-demand rides.

Single Pass rides cost between $10 and $25 per person, per ride. They're sold separately from Multi Pass, and you can purchase up to two different Single Pass attractions per day across all U.S. Disney parks.

Like Multi Pass, Lightning Lane Single Pass can sell out, so think about buying early.

You can make these selections on the same schedule as Multi Pass, depending on where you're staying on property. At Walt Disney World, you can select any available time that day. At Disneyland, you'll book these the day of your visit after you scan into the park, and you can only select the next available time.

Here are the rides that offer Lightning Lane Single Passes:

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Magic Kingdom)

TRON Lightcycle / Run (Magic Kingdom)

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (EPCOT)

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (Hollywood Studios, Disneyland)

Avatar Flight of Passage (Animal Kingdom)

Radiator Springs Racers (California Adventure)

Lightning Lane Premier Pass

Lightning Lane Premier Pass was introduced in 2024. It is the most expensive option, but it offers instant, reservation-free Lightning Lane access to all eligible rides in a single park for one day.

Unlike Multi Pass, you don't need to reserve return times. You can simply head to any of the eligible attractions and hop into the Lightning Lane when you're ready.

One drawback is that the pass currently doesn't offer park-hopping at Walt Disney World, meaning you'll have to choose which park to purchase the Premier Pass for each day.

While you may think this is the way to go, it comes at a price. The most expensive park, Magic Kingdom, can cost up to $449 on peak days. Pricing will vary based on the date of the park visit and the park you're visiting.

When Can You Purchase Lightning Lane?

One of the biggest changes when Disney switched to Lightning Lane in 2024 was the return of prebookable rides at Walt Disney World. If staying at a Disney hotel, you can now book up to three rides starting seven days before your trip. All other guests can purchase Multi Pass and make their selections up to three days before their visit. Bookings open at 7 a.m. ET on the first day you're eligible.

Disneyland doesn't offer advance bookings. Instead, you'll purchase Multi Pass with your ticket or after entering the park, then begin making Lightning Lane selections once you've scanned into the park.

Credit: Disney</enter>

Related: How To Book the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotels With Points

New Disneyland hotel Lightning Lane benefit

Guests staying at a Disneyland Resort hotel receive one Lightning Lane entry per guest for one eligible Multi Pass attraction at either park.
