Update: The changes referenced below officially took effect on July 1, 2024.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Check your latest billing statement on the Chase Sapphire Reserve\u00ae<\/sup><\/a> (Rates & Fees<\/a>) or The Ritz-Carlton\u2122 Credit Card<\/a> for some bad news. One of each card's key benefits is changing this summer, and you'll lose the ability to get a free meal or comfortable nap at the airport soon. Here's what you need to know.<\/p>\n

Changes to Chase Sapphire Reserve and Ritz-Carlton Card Priority Pass Benefit<\/span><\/h2>\n

The following terms are now showing up on Sapphire Reserve cardholder statements, so check your latest to see if it says this:<\/p>\n

“As of July 1, 2024, you will no longer have access to restaurants, cafes, and markets participating in the Priority Pass Select network as part of the Priority Pass SelectTM<\/sup> Benefit associated with your card. Access to Priority Pass Select\u2019s network of lounges and other select airport experiences is not impacted by this update.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While the same text hasn't yet been found on a Ritz-Carlton Card statement, a Chase spokesperson confirmed to AwardWallet that the card will also alter its Priority Pass benefit. Bummer.<\/p>\n

Thus, as of July 1, you won't be able to visit food establishments of Priority Pass<\/a> using a membership from either of these cards; the same applies to the J.P. Morgan Reserve\u00a0card<\/b>. If you weren't aware, there are Priority Pass restaurants, nap rooms, spas, and more<\/a>. Your ability to visit lounges with your Priority Pass membership from the Sapphire Reserve or Ritz-Carlton Card won't change.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Chase provided the following statement:<\/p>\n

“[B]eginning July 1, 2024, Chase Sapphire Reserve, J.P. Morgan Reserve and The Ritz-Carlton\u2122 Credit Card cardmembers will no longer have access to restaurants, cafes and markets participating in Priority Pass Select\u2122. Access to Priority Pass Select\u2019s network of lounges and other select airport experiences is not impacted by this update.<\/em><\/p>\n

Chase Sapphire Reserve, J.P. Morgan Reserve and The Ritz-Carlton\u2122 Credit Card primary cardmembers and authorized users who have activated their complimentary Priority Pass Select membership will continue to have access to 1,300+ participating lounges in 600+ cities around the world and select airport experiences participating in the Priority Pass Select network.<\/em><\/p>\n

As part of Chase\u2019s goal to invest in travel and provide the best experience to its cardmembers, having a trusted, premium airport lounge experience to offer cardmembers is integral to supporting their travel journey and end-to-end travel experience. Chase has made significant commitments to expand our Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge Network because enhancing our cardmembers\u2019 on-trip experience is paramount.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thus, Chase says the changes are a direct response to growing its own network of Chase Sapphire Lounges<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Putting This Into Context<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Sapphire Reserve<\/a> and the Ritz-Carlton Card<\/a> aren't the first cards to lose access to Priority Pass non-lounge elements. Amex pulled this benefit in 2019<\/a>, and Capital One made changes on January 1, 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the list of cards you can use to get a free meal at the airport is growing thin.<\/p>\n

Bottom Line<\/span><\/h2>\n

It's a real bummer to see both the Sapphire Reserve<\/a>, Ritz-Carlton Card<\/a>, and J.P. Morgan Reserve\u00a0card<\/b> lose access to Priority Pass restaurants and non-lounge perks. Many people have held these cards due to their better-than-others Priority Pass Select benefit. That's going to change on July 1, 2024. You may need to reevaluate these cards' positions in your wallet going forward.<\/p>\n
