Introduction to the One Key Rewards Program<\/span><\/h2>\n
One Key is the combined loyalty program for Hotels.com, Vrbo, and Expedia. This unified program allows members to earn OneKeyCash \u2014 the program's rewards currency \u2014 for all stays, activities, packages, car rentals, and even flights.<\/p>\n

Benefits include finding good deals, the convenience of having all your bookings on a single platform, and the ability to search across most airlines, hotel chains, etc.<\/p>\n
Disadvantages include not earning hotel points and not getting the same benefits and guarantees as when booking directly through a hotel loyalty program. Plus, there are extra layers to sort through in the event of changes or cancellations.<\/p>\n
One Key allows you to double dip, earning rewards with your credit card and the online booking platform. Let's take a closer look at the Hotels.com, Vrbo, and Expedia One Key joint program to help you know if you should pursue its rewards.<\/p>\n
Earning One Key Rewards<\/span><\/h2>\n
When One Key launched, all members earned a base of 2% OneKeyCash on Expedia.com and Hotels.com hotel stays, Vrbo rentals, car rental reservations, and experiences.<\/p>\n
In May 2025, this earning rate took a hit. Now, only Gold and Platinum members earn 2% OneKeyCash on Vrbo rentals. Silver members only earn 1% OneKeyCash on Vrbo rentals, and Blue members do not earn any OneKeyCash on Vrbo rentals. More on the One Key status tiers later.<\/p>\n
All One Key members earn 0.2% OneKeyCash on eligible flights. These are the base rewards before any multipliers are applied with One Key Elite status. These numbers don't include the additional miles or points you'll earn through charging the purchase to the right travel rewards credit card<\/a>.<\/p>\n
OneKeyCash is valued at $1 each toward Expedia, Hotels.com, or Vrbo bookings. You can use a combination of cash and OneKeyCash for any booking \u2014 except for flights. If you want to use OneKeyCash to book a flight on Expedia, you need to cover the full cost of the flight with rewards.<\/p>\n

One Key limitations<\/span><\/h3>\n
One of One Key's biggest limitations is that the program is only available in the United States and the United Kingdom. Moreover, you can only make payments in U.S. dollars or British pounds if you want to earn OneKeyCash or collect trip elements. You won't earn rewards if you book with a currency that's not USD or GBP.<\/p>\n
This wasn't originally the plan, but Expedia paused the rollout of One Key to further markets after the program started getting blowback. It's unclear when — or even if — One Key will be introduced to other markets.<\/p>\n
Maximizing Earnings With One Key<\/span><\/h2>\n
The Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo One Key unified program allows members to double-dip on their rewards to a small degree. Hotel rewards programs won't award points when booking through a third-party online travel agency (OTA) site like Expedia or Orbitz. However, you can add a frequent flyer number to a flight booked on Expedia and still earn miles on the flight.<\/p>\n
Thus, the One Key loyalty program might be useful when booking Expedia trip packages with other trip elements like flights and car rentals. The simplicity of booking more than one trip element simultaneously is the main draw of online travel agencies.<\/p>\n

Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo can have (but not always) better deals than you might find booking directly with an airline, hotel, or car rental agency.<\/p>\n
Blue members can save 10% or more on over 100,000 hotels worldwide, while higher elite status members can save up to 20% on over 10,000 hotels (note that is only 10% of hotels giving a bigger discount). Furthermore, when booking a vacation package, you will save up to 25% on a hotel stay if you add a flight to the package. Knocking up to 25 cents off each dollar spent can lead to big savings.<\/p>\n
Credit: Expedia<\/em><\/enter><\/figure>\n The downside, however, is that your hotel elite status probably won't be honored if you book through Expedia Group or other online travel agencies. Hotel rewards programs say they won't give you points or elite night credits or even recognize your status if you don't book directly with the hotel. And the inability to earn elite status credits on these bookings is one reason people shy away from booking hotels through an OTA.<\/p>\n
Redeeming One Key Rewards<\/span><\/h2>\n
OneKeyCash is good for booking a hotel stay or vacation rental on Expedia, Hotels.com, or Vrbo, or car rentals and experiences on Expedia. OneKeyCash is equal to $1 off the stay, rental, or experience, and you can use as much or as little as you like to offset your payment.<\/p>\n
For instance, if the Vrbo vacation rental is $500 for the night, you can use 100 OneKeyCash and pay the remaining $400 with your credit card.<\/p>\n
Credit: Vrbo<\/em><\/enter><\/figure>\n The one exception is flights. OneKeyCash is still worth $1 each, but you must pay for the entire flight with OneKeyCash. There's no cash and points option. Thus, you might have to save your OneKeyCash for a while if you want to book a flight.<\/p>\n

Family pooling with One Key Rewards<\/span><\/h3>\n
One Key Rewards doesn't have a family pooling option for redeeming points. In other words, if multiple family members have individual One Key accounts, you can't transfer money between accounts.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, an individual can accrue OneKeyCash on stays, car rentals, and Expedia experiences booked for family and friends. The member doesn't even need to be on the trip to earn rewards. So, there's no real reason to have multiple One Key Rewards accounts within the same family. In fact, it's better not to.<\/p>\n

OneKeyCash expiration<\/span><\/h3>\n
OneKeyCash expires after 18 months of inactivity<\/a>. To keep your rewards from expiring, you need to earn or redeem OneKeyCash within 18 months after your last activity. Using or redeeming points in any manner, including transferring them, will prevent them from expiring.<\/p>\n

One Key Elite Status Benefits<\/span><\/h2>\n
Like other loyalty programs, the One Key has elite status tiers you can earn based on each trip element you book. New members start at Blue status and can attain higher elite status when hitting a certain number of trip elements in a calendar year:<\/p>\n

- Each night of Vrbo vacation rentals<\/li>\n
- Eligible flight bookings<\/li>\n
- Each day of a car rental<\/li>\n
- Each cruise cabin night<\/li>\n
- A round-trip ground transportation ticket (airport shuttles, transfers, etc.)<\/li>\n
- An activity ticket<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Only trip elements valued at $25 or above, excluding taxes and fees, count toward moving up the elite status tiers. Luckily, your entire booking does not have to exceed a certain price to earn One Key rewards.<\/p>\n
In other words, you can move up to One Key Silver status after staying just five nights \u2014 or after booking one flight, staying two nights, and renting a car for two days. Eligible bookings count equally, even if one is more expensive. Moreover, when booking flights, they don't need to be round-trip. Trip elements reset every calendar year.<\/p>\n
Credit: One Key<\/em><\/enter><\/figure>\n Increasing your One Key elite status allows you to earn bonus OneKeyCash on stays, but only at VIP Access properties. Silver status gets 50% more cash (3%), Gold status gets 2X cash (4%), and Platinum status gets 3X cash (6% total).<\/p>\n
Again, the OneKeyCash multiplier only applies to stays at VIP Access properties, not to any other types of stays, car rentals, flights, cruise nights, or activity tickets. This is a major downside to the program.<\/p>\n

Long-time rewards collectors may remember the Hotels.com Rewards program. In short, members earned a free night after spending 10 nights through the old program \u2014 essentialy a 10% return on spending. Comparatively, One Key Rewards pales in comparison.<\/p>\n
The unified Hotels.com\/Vrbo\/Expedia One Key program only gives 2% rewards back — which you can only boost up to 6% after completing 30 trip elements (meanwhile, you'll only earn 2%-4% rewards on the first 30 elements).<\/p>\n
As we saw in the comments when we announced the end of Hotels.com Rewards<\/a>, many customers were disappointed and immediately began looking for alternative booking methods.<\/p>\n
As fans of the Hotels.com Rewards program, we felt just as frustrated. However, it's important to focus on what's the best option now. And, depending on the trip, One Key Rewards might still be that program.<\/p>\n

If you use Expedia, Hotels.com, or Vrbo to book stays at hotels that participate in a major loyalty program that offers points and elite qualifying nights, you'll likely be disappointed.<\/p>\n
The OneKeyCash you earn on a hotel stay can be a pittance compared to what you could earn with the hotel's own rewards program. And it goes beyond hotel stays, as programs like Marriott Bonvoy<\/a> and Wyndham Rewards<\/a> offer points on activities, cruises, car rentals, and more.<\/p>\n
We track the average redemption values AwardWallet users get from numerous rewards programs<\/a>. Many of these provide a higher return on spending than One Key — especially when factoring in earning rates.<\/p>\n
For instance, travelers earn 10x IHG One Rewards points at most IHG brands. When you factor in the 0.68\u00a2 per point<\/span> average redemption rate, you're earning almost 6% return on your stays. And that's before elite status bonuses and credit card earnings. Cardholders of the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card<\/a> earn a total of 26x IHG One Rewards points after IHG Platinum Elite<\/a> status bonus and card earnings.
