Big things are happening at Fiji Airways. A few short weeks ago, Oneworld announced Fiji's flag carrier would become the alliance's 15th full-fledged member<\/a>. And today, on a random Thursday in June, Fiji Airways shared it's adopting the American Airlines AAdvantage\u00ae<\/sup> program effective next year.<\/p>\n

Here's what we know and don't know about the latter development.<\/p>\n

Fiji Airways To Adopt American Airlines AAdvantage\u00ae<\/sup><\/span><\/h2>\n

Fiji Airways has a loyalty program but doesn't have its own mileage currency. Tabua Club<\/a> is effectively a pay-to-play guest recognition program, offering value for the right kind of traveler \u2014 but it doesn't stack up with other Oneworld<\/a> heavyweights.<\/p>\n

Instead of minting its own currency, Fiji Airways is latching on to a partner airline program: American Airlines AAdvantage\u00ae<\/sup>. And to coincide with new connectivity options via Oneworld carriers, Fiji Airways flyers can look forward to new benefits and a path to elite status \u2014 plus a direct way to earn AA miles<\/a> while flying.<\/p>\n

The adoption will take effect in 2025, around the time Fiji Airways is formally inducted into the Oneworld alliance. Change-wise, AAdvantage\u00ae<\/sup> members can look forward to priority services, an increased baggage allowance, enhanced award redemptions, and more when flying Fiji Airways.<\/p>\n

It's unclear if other AAdvantage\u00ae<\/sup> staple benefits, such as Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs), will be valid for Fiji Airways flights \u2014 or if complimentary upgrades will be on offer for those with American Airlines elite status<\/a>. Moreover, it's unclear if the adoption of AAdvantage\u00ae<\/sup> spells the end of Tabua Club entirely.<\/p>\n

One thing is for sure: the American Airlines press release<\/a> and Fiji Airways' statement<\/a> announcing the move were light on details. Hopefully, both airlines will share the more granular specifics on what Fiji Airways' “new” loyalty program will look like. We'll share what we know when we learn more.<\/p>\n
