At the end of 2023, Qatar Airways announced plans to install Starlink on its fleet, with an initial goal of connecting three aircraft by the end of 2024. As it turns out, that original plan was far too aggressive.<\/p>\n
In August 2024, the target was updated to outfit the entire fleet with Starlink by the end of 2026. As of July 2025<\/a>, Qatar had completed the retrofit of all 777s equipped with Starlink Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n The airline is now focused on retrofitting the entire Airbus A350 fleet with Starlink. We don't know how many A350 planes already have Starlink Wi-Fi installed. However, Qatar's website now states that 56 routes on A350s and B777s are now operational with high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n Qatar Airlines also boasted about installing Starlink Wi-Fi on a Boeing 777 in under 10 hours, significantly faster than the initial target of three days per aircraft. As such, Qatar installed Starlink on its 777s over 50% ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n Once all 777s had high-speed Wi-Fi, Qatar Airways began retrofitting its Airbus A350s \u2014 several months ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n The smaller Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s, as well as the larger Airbus A380s and the more modern Boeing 787s, are the last aircraft to get Starlink installation. Considering Qatar Airways' current pacing, the entire fleet could indeed have Starlink Wi-Fi by the end of 2026 — if not sooner.<\/p>\n As the Starlink connections go live, all passengers \u2014 business and economy alike \u2014 get Starlink Wi-Fi for free.<\/p>\n At this time, passengers can access free Starlink Wi-Fi on Boeing 777 flights to and from the following cities in the Americas:<\/p>\n Starlink offers high-speed, in-motion Wi-Fi connections via SpaceX's satellite network. The Lufthansa Group, Emirates<\/a>, United<\/a>, Hawaiian Airlines, airBaltic, Air New Zealand, JSX, and ZIPAIR have already installed or are planning to install Starlink — and the reviews have been stellar.<\/p>\n Starlink Aviation<\/a> is the Starlink brand for aircraft. Currently, nearly 9,500 satellites are in low Earth orbit, with thousands more planned for launch in the next few years.<\/p>\n Initially, the service offered download speeds ranging from 40 to 200 Mbps and upload speeds from 8 to 25 Mbps. However, Qatar is now advertising speeds up to 500 Mbps per aircraft, and Starlink users on United have confirmed sustained download speeds of 100 Mbps. We can expect business class passengers to be prioritized, with the average passenger receiving around 100 Mbps, possibly much better than many passengers experience at home.<\/p>\n The service also features a very low latency (the time between the source and destination) of less than 0.1 seconds. In other words, it's fast and not laggy.<\/p>\n On flights that do not yet have Starlink Wi-Fi, Qatar Airways offers limited Wi-Fi access. Select passengers get one hour of complimentary internet, but speeds are notoriously slow. Wi-Fi is only available on certain aircraft, including Boeing 787-9s, 787-8s, and Airbus A380s.<\/p>\n Narrowbody aircraft \u2014 such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 \u2014 do not yet have Wi-Fi, nor do Qatar\u2019s older Airbus A330s.<\/p>\n Qatar Privilege Club members\u00a0receive one hour of complimentary access, and\u00a0Qatar Student Club<\/a> members enjoy\u00a0unlimited high-speed internet on board.<\/p>\n For those who don\u2019t qualify for free access, Wi-Fi passes start at $10 \u2014 with a 20% discount if purchased before the flight. Fortunately, when the Starlink retrofit is complete, everyone will have free access to high-speed Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n If you need only a little onboard Wi-Fi, become a Privilege Club member before your flight. All Privilege Club members \u2014 including base-level Burgundy members \u2014 receive 1 hour of complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi. Qatar Student Club members get unlimited Wi-Fi on Qatar flights.<\/p>\n If you aren't a student and need more than one hour of connection, several credit cards offer airline incidental credits<\/a> that can cover your onboard Wi-Fi purchase. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve\u00ae<\/sup><\/a> (Rates & Fees<\/a>) offers a $300 travel credit.<\/p>\n That's enough to cover Qatar Wi-Fi purchases on at least 30 flights.
