In other words, if you book an award with a short flight in business- or first class that connects to a long-haul flight in economy, you'll spend the same number of miles as an itinerary with all flights in the higher class of service.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, United filters these out of search results and typically shows only itineraries where the long-haul leg is in the higher class of service. Plus, United clearly labels these itineraries as “mixed-cabin” awards in the online search results.<\/p>\n
Avianca LifeMiles<\/a> is a great alternative to United for mixed-cabin awards because it charges a pro-rated price based on the distance flown in each cabin. As a Star Alliance member, you may be able to book the same mixed-cabin itinerary for much less. I have taken advantage of this feature more than once.<\/p>\nCan I book a round-the-world ticket with United miles?<\/span><\/h3>\nUnfortunately, United doesn't offer a “round-the-world” ticket option with miles. If you're looking to book a round-the-world ticket with Star Alliance airlines, consider a program like ANA Mileage Club<\/a>\u00a0or Lufthansa Miles & More<\/a>, which specifically offer those types of tickets.<\/p>\nItinerary Rules for Complex United Award Bookings<\/span><\/h2>\nThe final rules detailed below might not apply to every booking, but are helpful to know for more complex trips. If you can't get an award to price as expected online, you've most likely run afoul of one of these rules.<\/p>\n
Published route requirement<\/span><\/h3>\nA published route requirement requires award tickets to follow routes that are available for sale. Unlike American Airlines, United has no published routing rules. However, some basic “common-sense” restrictions still apply to United awards.<\/p>\n
For example, an itinerary from the western United States to Australia won't be valid with a connection in Europe or Africa because it requires traveling much<\/em> farther than many available routings with more direct flights. I recall once being able to connect in Africa (specifically, Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines) flying from the U.S. to Japan. This no longer seems possible.<\/p>\n
Maximum Permitted Mileage (MPM)<\/span><\/h3>\nMaximum Permitted Mileage (MPM) is a more precise way to define a common-sense routing. Loyalty programs that use this type of rule define how far you can deviate from the most direct routing in terms of extra miles traveled. United doesn't enforce an MPM rule, so there's no mathematical way to check whether a routing is allowed.<\/p>\n
