Occasionally, the issuer sends targeted offers to cardholders, offering bonus points for adding one or more authorized users.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that some American Express cards charge a fee to add authorized users. For example, the <a data-ccid=\"4028089\" href=\"https:\/\/awardwallet.com\/credit-cards\/amex-membership-rewards\/amex-platinum\/\">American Express Platinum Card<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/a> charges $195 for each additional Platinum Card<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> for Authorized Users (<a data-ccid=\"4028089\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexpress.com\/us\/credit-cards\/card-application\/apply\/prospect\/terms\/platinum-card\/91101-10-0#offer-terms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rates & Fees<\/a>). <a data-ccid=\"4028085\" href=\"https:\/\/awardwallet.com\/credit-cards\/amex-membership-rewards\/amex-gold-card\/\">American Express<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Gold Card<\/a> holders, on the other hand, can add up to five authorized users without a fee  (<a data-ccid=\"4028085\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexpress.com\/us\/credit-cards\/card-application\/apply\/prospect\/terms\/gold-card\/91101-10-0\/?print#terms-details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rates & Fees<\/a>). That's reason enough to keep your eye out for one of these targeted bonus offers.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing to consider before adding an authorized user is whether they receive the same benefits as the primary cardholder. If you pay $195 for each additional Platinum Card<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> for Authorized Users on your Platinum Card<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, the authorized user cardholders receive lounge access and other benefits. Platinum Card<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> authorized users get the same elite status privileges as the primary cardholder, as well. However, you\u2019ll pay a fee for authorized users on your Platinum Card<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> account, so you'll need to weigh the benefits against the cost. <em>Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Earn more points: <\/strong>Purchases made by the additional cardholders earn points for the primary account. When adding more than one family member as an authorized user, you can ensure <em>all<\/em> household spending earns points for your account. The downside to this? You\u2019re responsible for paying back everything the household spends.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Allows you to transfer points to authorized users: <\/strong>The major banks have tightened guidelines on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/travel\/which-programs-allow-free-points-sharing\/\" rel=\"noopener\">transferring points to other people's accounts<\/a>. By adding an authorized user, you can sometimes sidestep the tighter restrictions. For example, it\u2019s possible to move <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/credit-cards\/amex-membership-rewards\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Amex Membership Rewards<\/a> to someone else's frequent flyer account, but only if that person is an authorized user on your Membership Rewards-earning card \u2014 and only if they have been on the account for at least 90 days.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Helps meet minimum spend and status bonuses: <\/strong>Adding an authorized user can help you meet the minimum spend on new cards sooner by allowing more than one person to charge to the account. It can also help you achieve spending bonuses on a card, such as earning a free night after spending $15,000 on the <a data-ccid=\"4048089\" href=\"https:\/\/awardwallet.com\/credit-cards\/hilton-honors\/hilton-surpass\/\">Hilton Honors American Express Surpass<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Card<\/a> or <a data-ccid=\"4048116\" href=\"https:\/\/awardwallet.com\/credit-cards\/world-of-hyatt\/chase-hyatt-card\/\">The World of Hyatt Credit Card<\/a> (<a data-ccid=\"4048116\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/fs-bin\/click?id=g3lR0xvjyAU&offerid=1753725.10005136&type=3&u1=697876a66715c6728f208af0ca79ae25&subid=639396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rates & Fees<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Boost authorized user cardholders' credit score: <\/strong>If someone close to you is just starting out on their credit journey, you can add them as an authorized user. In exchange, they\u2019ll get a kickback from your higher credit score and the length of your credit history.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Purchase and travel protections extend to authorized user accounts: <\/strong>Most rewards cards extend the built-in protections to authorized users. This provides a cost-effective way of covering family members and those close to you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It should go without saying, but we\u2019ll say it anyway. You are responsible for any charges incurred by authorized users. Be mindful that their actions may affect your credit score. Only add an authorized user if you have complete trust in that person.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Adding_Someone_to_Your_Credit_Card\">Adding Someone to Your Credit Card<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To add someone as an authorized user to your credit card, you'll need information like their name, date of birth, and Social Security Number. You'll also need their mailing address, so they can receive the card. How exactly you add them as an authorized user depends on the bank.<\/p>\n<p>With <strong>American Express<\/strong>, log in, select your card, and head to &#8220;account services&#8221; on the main screen. Click on &#8220;add someone to your account&#8221; for personal cards, or &#8220;get additional employee cards&#8221; for business cards. Note that you might not see the authorized user offer when you go directly to the application. Instead, first check your American Express offers. Others believe you can't receive a welcome bonus for opening a credit card after you've been an authorized user on that type of card. Thankfully, that's not the case.<\/p>\n<p>Being an authorized user on someone else's card account does not preclude you from receiving a bonus on your own account for which you separately applied.
