The W Las Vegas at the MGM Mandalay Bay Complex<\/a> is now open. Marriott Bonvoy members can now earn and redeem points for stays at this iconic Las Vegas property. The move is a big step forward for the hospitality collaboration between Marriott and MGM Rewards<\/a>. The new property is massive, with over 1,000 rooms, and has the potential to offer some great reward options when visiting Vegas.<\/p>\n

According to the President & COO of Mandalay Bay and Luxor, Travis Lunn:<\/p>\n

What Does Award Night Availability Look Like at the W Las Vegas?<\/span><\/h2>\n

There is plenty of award availability at the W Las Vegas using\u00a0Marriott Bonvoy<\/a> points. However, the pricing can vary wildly, with some nights costing more than six or seven times other nights in the same month.<\/p>\n

For instance, in January 2025, there is plenty of award space from as low as 15,000 points to as high as 115,000 points.<\/p>\n

In February, award pricing swings even more. While some nights are available for as low as 17,000 points, the high end is priced at a whopping 150,000 points.<\/p>\n

March is a very similar picture, although the cheaper nights are at 19,000 points now, while the top-end nights are still priced at an eye-watering 150,000 points.<\/p>\n

Comparing the points pricing to the cash value of the room offers an eye-opening discovery. Take the nights priced at 19,000 points; these nights are available to book for $169.<\/p>\n

That would work out at 0.88 cents per point — which would be competitive vs. the 0.93\u00a2 per point average redemption rate that AwardWallet users have recently gotten from Bonvoy points.<\/p>\n

However, there's a huge catch. Marriott waits until the final checkout page to disclose a $50 resort fee on award bookings. After taxes are tacked onto that resort fee, you're paying $56.69 per night. That drives the redemption rate down to just 0.59 cents per point.<\/p>\n

What about one of the more expensive nights in March? Is there some value to be had there? High-end nights setting you back 150,000 points + $56.69 can be had for $789 in cash. That's a much worse redemption rate of 0.49 cents per point.<\/p>\n

The wild swings in redemption rates and values repeat month after month. In July 2025, nights are available from as low as 17,000 points up to 110,000 points.<\/p>\n

These will set you back $159 or $589 respectively. Crunching the numbers is a value of 0.60 and 0.48 cents per point. Sadly, neither is anything to get excited about.<\/p>\n
