At most IHG hotels, you'll earn 10 base points for every $1 USD spent; however, spending at Staybridge and Candlewood Suites earns only five elite-qualifying points per $1 USD spent.<\/p>\n<p>One common point of confusion is that base points (which count towards elite status) are not the same as redeemable points that you can use to book award nights. There is no free breakfast benefit unless you can make it all the way to Diamond Elite, which takes some real doing. Upgrades are not as common, at least in my personal experience at the Platinum level. These are never guaranteed and are always at the hotel's discretion. However, the Milestone Rewards launched in 2022 help offset this a bit. These provide suite upgrades, although the hotel still needs to confirm ahead of time. Also, the food and beverage rewards could really improve some stays.<\/p>\n<p>If IHG is everywhere you need to travel, and you're confident you'll qualify through nights, it could be worth staying loyal to the chain. In addition to the IHG elite status benefits, you'll also earn at least six Milestone Rewards. These sweeten the pot even more. Plus, you'll earn oodles of bonus points.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are some downsides. IHG doesn't have quite the same luxury hotel footprint you'll find with Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt. There are an impressive number of Holiday Inn Express hotels worldwide and others that fall into their mid-scale brands. So, if you're looking for mostly five-star stays, look elsewhere for a chain that fits that bill.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Which_IHG_Status_Level_is_the_Best_Value\">Which IHG Status Level is the Best Value?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The sweet spot with IHG seems to really be Platinum Elite obtained through either the <span data-sheets-root=\"1\"><a data-ccid=\"4048106\" href=\"\/blog\/link\/IHGRewardsClubPremierCreditCard\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\">IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card<\/a> or the <a data-ccid=\"4048281\" href=\"\/blog\/link\/IHGRewardsPremierBusinessMastercard\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\">IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card<\/a>. This gets you the bulk of the benefits without having to commit to true loyalty with the chain. Even if you only have a few stays per year, it's nice to earn some extra points. Plus, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/credit-cards\/ihg-one-rewards\/ihg-free-night-certificate\/\" rel=\"noopener\">IHG free night<\/a> offered by either card makes up for the annual fee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you have a bunch of work or personal travel where you'll be paying cash for stays, it would be well worth getting an IHG credit card up front. This will get you the 60% Platinum Elite bonus on every stay and generous earning rates if you use your card to pay the bill. Even if you ultimately qualify for Diamond, earning additional points along the way is a big plus, and well worth it.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Final_Thoughts\">Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With over 6,000 hotels worldwide, being a member of IHG One Rewards is already a great idea. If you can earn elite status that provides you extra perks, even better. Members who frequently stay with the chain will earn points or nights toward the next status tier, climbing their way through the four IHG elite tiers.<\/p>\n<p>The IHG status qualification requirements are in line with other chains. However, holding an IHG credit card is an easy shortcut to <a href=\"\/hotels\/ihg-one-rewards\/ihg-platinum-elite\/\">Platinum Elite<\/a>. This status tier provides a great set of perks, although it falls short of some of the best perks offered by IHG Diamond.
