Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles can take you pretty far — and for pretty good value, too. But something you couldn't do with Alaska miles \u2014 until now \u2014 has been to use them to book mixed partner awards. As first uncovered by Frequent Miler<\/a>, you can now book one Alaska Mileage Plan<\/a> award ticket and fly two partner airlines. That's a huge development as award travelers were previously limited to just one Mileage Plan partner (plus Alaska, if it fit into your award trip).<\/p>\n

However, there are a few limitations to this new ability. Here's everything you need to know about Alaska mixed-partner awards.<\/p>\n

Alaska Airlines Now Allows Mixed Partner Award Bookings on Select Carriers<\/span><\/h2>\n

Late last year, Alaska Airlines unveiled a massive overhaul to its Mileage Plan loyalty program<\/a>. Among the proposed changes, Alaska teased that mixed or multi-partner awards were coming soon. Now, they're here. Sort of.<\/p>\n

As of today, you can use your Mileage Plan miles<\/a> for an award ticket that includes travel on two partner airlines. However, this functionality isn't perfect yet. At the time of writing, you can only find mixed partner awards on a few carrier pairings, and the pricing isn't always quite right.<\/p>\n

Alaska multi-carrier awards are only available on select partners<\/span><\/h3>\n

Mileage Plan multi-partner awards are limited to itineraries operated by a combination of American Airlines, British Airways, and Finnair. This roster will likely grow, but for now, it's neat that you can fly from Baltimore to London on British Airways and then on to Helsinki via Finnair \u2014 all on one ticket. Novel, right?<\/p>\n

Still, it's nice that you now have more options through Mileage Plan to get across the pond than flying just one airline, like Icelandair<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The prices for mixed partner awards aren't always correct<\/span><\/h3>\n

But the most obvious catch is the pricing. Sometimes, you'll notice that mixed partner award tickets don't wholly abide by the Mileage Plan award charts<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For example, a flight from Los Angeles to Helsinki via London covers 6,607 miles, which means it should cost 35,000 Alaska miles in economy. But, it's currently pricing at 42,500 miles — which is 7,500 miles more than it should.<\/p>\n

Mileage Plan awards aren't supposed to price per segment, so we expect these discrepancies will get ironed out sometime soon. But it's worth noting that this only applies to some awards. As shown earlier, Baltimore to Helsinki via London is priced correctly at 27,500 miles in economy and 55,000 in business class.<\/p>\n

Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h2>\n

Alaska Airlines delivered on its promise to make mixed partner awards available with Mileage Plan miles. For now, this means you can book awards operated by a combination of American Airlines, British Airways, and Finnair \u2014 all on one ticket.<\/p>\n

However, Alaska Airlines has many more partners than just these three Oneworld member airlines<\/a>, so this new functionality should be expanded at some point. And with that, hopefully, Alaska will streamline the pricing to match the Mileage Plan award charts. As it stands today, there are still a good number of pricing discrepancies.<\/p>\n

But we are encouraged to see Alaska delivering on its promise to add mixed partner awards. This should certainly increase the value of Alaska miles<\/a> — making the miles earned through the Atmos\u2122 Rewards Ascent Visa Signature\u00ae<\/sup> card<\/a> even more valuable.<\/span><\/p>\n
