Next on the agenda is a revamp of its credit card lineup, and there\u2019s a lot to unpack.<\/p>\n<p>To make things easier, we\u2019ll go card by card to break down what\u2019s changing \u2014 both in terms of benefits and what\u2019s happening under the hood. Some of these perks were <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/news\/southwest-rapid-rewards\/credit-card-benefit-changes\/\" rel=\"noopener\">first introduced back in May<\/a>, but plenty of others are new.<\/p>\n<p>That said, these \u201cnew and enhanced benefits\u201d come with a cost. Each card is getting an annual fee increase. The answer is no.<\/p>\n<p>All benefits take effect on <strong>July 24, 2025 &#8212;<\/strong>\u00a0except for the seating perks, which begin July 29, 2025, and the boarding perks, which kick in January 27, 2026. These two are tied to operational changes that the airline isn't quite ready to roll out.<\/p>\n<p>As for when you\u2019ll be charged the higher annual fee, that begins with your 2026 cardmember anniversary. Like everything else the airline has overhauled up to this point, opinions will invariably range between \u201cthis is terrible\u201d and \u201cthis is great\u201d &#8212; depending on what you think of the airline's new direction.<\/p>\n<p>The obvious takeaway is that these changes to Southwest\u2019s credit card lineup bridge the gap between an airline that used to stand out by doing things differently and the rest of the full-service carriers in the U.S. Free checked bags, early boarding, and elite status credits for spending are standard perks on most co-branded airline cards \u2014 and that now includes Southwest.<\/p>\n<p>For some travelers, the changes will make a good amount of sense. For others, they may be just another reason to look elsewhere. The good news, though, is that if you\u2019re already a Rapid Rewards credit cardholder, you\u2019ll have until your 2026 renewal date to try out the new benefits before you're on the hook for the steeper annual fee.
