Whoever steps into this role will play a big part in shaping the program\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>The job posting is brand new, but we're already wondering what changes lie ahead. Here\u2019s what might be coming and why this role will be so influential.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"American_Airlines_Is_Recruiting_a_New_AAdvantage_Program_Director\">American Airlines Is Recruiting a New AAdvantage Program Director<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever dreamed of running the American Airlines AAdvantage program and have a bachelor\u2019s degree in business, marketing, strategy, or a related field, along with airline experience and at least seven years of leadership, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jobs.aa.com\/job\/Dallas-Director,-AAdvantage-TX-75201\/81428-en_US\/\" rel=\"noopener\">now\u2019s your chance to apply<\/a>. Maybe not right away, but likely in the intermediate future. And those changes could affect the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/airlines\/american-aadvantage\/elite-status\/\" rel=\"noopener\">AAdvantage elite status<\/a>: <\/strong>The job posting tasks the new director with deepening member engagement and strengthening customer relationships. The airline\u2019s most loyal customers are its elites, so it wouldn\u2019t be surprising to see changes to elite benefits in the future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Co-branded credit cards: <\/strong>Late last year, Citi announced it would take over the Barclays co-branded AAdvantage credit card back book. While we don\u2019t yet know exactly what the card landscape will look like once <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/news\/credit-cards\/citi-sole-issuer-aadvantage-cards\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Citi becomes the sole issuer<\/a>, the new director will almost certainly play a role in shaping that process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Value of AAdvantage miles and partner ecosystem: <\/strong>For those who like to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/airlines\/american-aadvantage\/best-ways-to-use-american-miles\/\" rel=\"noopener\">earn and redeem AAdvantage miles<\/a>, the way the new director approaches the program\u2019s value proposition will be worth paying close attention to. The miles and the partner network are some of AAdvantage\u2019s competitive advantages, and time will tell whether the program doubles down on these strengths, reverses course, or stays put.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promotions:<\/strong> The job description specifically calls out responsibility for crafting ad hoc promotions. This ties closely to another responsibility \u2014 enhancing customer targeting \u2014 so it\u2019s possible we\u2019ll see more personalized offers going forward. Hopefully, they\u2019ll be rewarding ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All told, a lot could come out of this. As someone who\u2019s participated in AAdvantage and made a concerted effort to earn elite status over the past several years, I\u2019m especially interested in whether the program can rise to the level of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/airlines\/alaska-atmos-rewards\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Atmos Rewards<\/a>. Particularly after recent changes, Alaska's program is arguably more rewarding for AA flyers than AAdvantage itself.<\/p>\n<p>But given that one of the new director\u2019s responsibilities is to \u201cdefine and evolve the strategic direction of the AAdvantage program,\u201d there\u2019s good reason to believe positive changes could be ahead. And it's possible the right changes could even be enough to bring some <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/airlines\/american-aadvantage\/why-american-lost-my-loyalty\/\" rel=\"noopener\">disgruntled former AAdvantage elites<\/a> back into the fold.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Our_Take\">Our Take<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>American Airlines is hiring a new director for the AAdvantage program. It\u2019s a significant role, and the person selected will have incredible influence over how the program changes (for better or worse) in the years ahead. That said, it\u2019s unlikely we\u2019ll see immediate changes, as the posting is brand new and it will take time for the new hire to get up to speed.<\/p>\n<p>But with competing programs like Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/news\/alaska-atmos-rewards\/new-program-announcement\/\" rel=\"noopener\">raising the bar recently<\/a>, we\u2019re hopeful the next director takes AAdvantage in the same direction.
