On top of the new cardholder bonus, you\u2019ll earn United miles on debit purchases at the following rates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Earn 1 mile per $1 spent on United purchases.<\/li>\n<li>Earn 1 mile per $2 spent on all other qualifying transactions.<\/li>\n<li>Earn 2,500\u00a0bonus miles\u00a0when you spend $10,000 each calendar year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There\u2019s also a \u201cBalance Rewards\u201d feature that may be appealing. For those who maintain a balance in their debit account, earnings work as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Earn up to 70,000 bonus miles each year based on your average account balance, with miles earned monthly.<\/li>\n<li>No monthly fee if your average account balance is at least $2,000. Obviously, this number will vary widely, but it provides a helpful reference point. That said, the card does offer additional benefits. There\u2019s an annual spend bonus that allows you to earn up to 7,500 bonus points each year on your anniversary, based on the following annual net purchases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2,500 bonus points: Spend $5,000.00 to $9,999.99<\/li>\n<li>5,000 bonus points: Spend $10,000.00 to $14,999.99<\/li>\n<li>7,500 bonus points: Spend $15,000.00+<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The earning rates on the Southwest debit card are similar to its United counterpart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Earn 1 point per $1 spent on eligible Southwest Airlines purchases and qualifying dining and subscription purchases, including cable, internet, phone, streaming services, utilities, and insurance premiums.<\/li>\n<li>Earn 1 point per $2 spent on other qualifying everyday purchases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s nice to see additional categories like dining and insurance earn 1 point per dollar. Insurance, in particular, is another expense that often comes with a credit card fee, making this an attractive alternative. In addition, the debit card deposits 7,500 Companion Pass qualifying points into your Rapid Rewards account each calendar year.<\/p>\n<p>That means you\u2019d earn 27,500 Companion Pass points in our tuition example, putting you roughly one-fifth of the way toward the 135,000 points required.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Bottom_Line\">Bottom Line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are several expenses that typically charge a fee if you want to use a credit card, and few are as potentially lucrative as college tuition. If you find yourself in this phase of life, your college may allow debit card payments at a reduced fee. If so, these new debit cards from United and Southwest could be a smart way to earn valuable points and miles on an otherwise unrewarding expense.<\/p>\n<p>The same principle applies to any situation where you\u2019re trying to avoid a credit card fee.
