JetBlue just announced Points On Repeat, a new subscription plan that allows you to earn up to 2,500 JetBlue TrueBlue<\/a> points per month. Higher membership tiers also offer perks like bonus points per $1 spent on JetBlue flights and rebates of up to 10% on award redemptions. However, with such a steep price tag, it'll be difficult to squeeze enough value from the subscription to justify its cost.<\/p>\n

Here's everything you should know about Points On Repeat, including whether the math makes sense. Spoiler: it doesn't.<\/p>\n

What Is JetBlue Points On Repeat?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The new Points On Repeat subscription plan<\/a> gives JetBlue loyalists the chance to receive a deposit of TrueBlue points in their account every month. It has three tiers \u2014 Points Traveler, Points Adventurer, and Points Trailblazer.<\/p>\n

JetBlue isn't the only airline out there to offer a subscription plan to its members. Air France-KLM Flying Blue offers Flying Blue Extra<\/a>, which lets members earn bonus miles, receive lounge vouchers, and get better rates on flights. Finnair Subscribe to Avios<\/a> allows you to earn up to 20,000 Avios per month, and the list goes on and on.<\/p>\n

The perks of Points On Repeat increase with each tier. If you sign up for Points Traveler, the base tier, you'll receive 1,000 TrueBlue points in your account every month. It costs $13 per month, or you can save by paying for a full year for $144.<\/p>\n

Points Adventurers receive 2,000 TrueBlue points each month and an extra 2 points per $1 spent on JetBlue-operated flights. This is in addition to any bonus points you may receive by being a cardholder of a JetBlue credit card<\/a> or holding Mosaic status<\/a>. This plan costs $32.50 per month or $360 per year.<\/p>\n

Finally, Points Trailblazers receive 2,500 monthly bonus TrueBlue points, an extra 3 TrueBlue points per $1, and a 10% rebate on JetBlue award redemptions. This rebate is on top of any rebates you receive as a JetBlue cardholder. These perks are nice, but this plan costs a whopping $67.75 monthly or $750 annually.<\/p>\n

Should You Subscribe to Points On Repeat?<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are two issues with subscription plans. They often cost more than they are worth, and there's generally no reason to hoard points in your loyalty program account. Unless you take regular JetBlue flights and plan to use your monthly bonus points as soon as they are deposited, there's no reason to pay for them in the first place.<\/p>\n

Regardless, here's how the math of Points On Repeat shakes down.<\/p>\n

Based on recent AwardWallet user redemptions, JetBlue TrueBlue points are worth 1.24\u00a2 apiece<\/a>. That makes 1,000 TrueBlue points worth roughly $12.40. If you subscribe to Points Traveler,\u00a0you'll pay $13 per month for $12.40 worth of points, which doesn't seem like a good value.<\/p>\n

As is often the case, AwardWallet users typically get more value from business class redemptions than from short-haul economy redemptions. For business class redemptions, AwardWallet users redeem TrueBlue points for 1.39\u00a2 apiece, on average. If you were able to match that value, you'd still only squeeze $13.90 from your monthly TrueBlue points as a Points Traveler subscriber, which isn't enough to justify the cost.<\/p>\n

When you look at the higher tiers, the math gets even worse. The 2,000 bonus TrueBlue points you'd earn as a Points Adventurer are worth $24.80 \u2014 $7.70 less than the monthly subscription price. However, you will earn an extra 2 points per $1 on JetBlue-operated flights.<\/p>\n

Assuming the 1.24\u00a2 valuation, you'd need to earn at least 620 bonus TrueBlue points per month to break even, which would require that you spend at least $310 on JetBlue flights every single month.\u00a0And even then, you're breaking even. You'd need to spend substantially more to justify subscribing.<\/p>\n

Finally, if you paid $67.75 per month to be a Points Trailblazer, you'd receive roughly $31 worth of points every month. That means you'd need to squeeze at least $36.75 in value from the 3 bonus points per $1 and 10% redemption rebate (stackable with the JetBlue credit card rebate benefit) to justify the membership.<\/p>\n

If you spend $988 on JetBlue flights each month, you'd recoup the difference in value from your bonus points, and the 10% redemption rebate would be all upside. However, most people don't spend $1,000 a month on airfare, especially on an airline like JetBlue, which has a much smaller footprint than other U.S. carriers.<\/p>\n

Other Ways to Earn JetBlue TrueBlue Points<\/span><\/h2>\n
