I see all the bloggers posting content from a pristine overwater villa, and the FOMO goes out of control.

Although I've stayed in an overwater bungalow before on my honeymoon in Bora Bora, something about this particular destination kept calling to me. I feel like until I post a picture on Instagram from an overwater bungalow in the Maldives, I'm not truly a miles-and-points expert.

With my ten-year anniversary this year, now was as good a time as any to finally go on this once-in-a-lifetime trip. But these rooms can cost thousands of dollars per night if you don't know what you're doing. Here's how I put my Hilton credit cards and massive stash of points to work to knock my costs down considerably.

Getting the Best Deal on Reservations

I could never afford the cash rates at many of the top properties in the Maldives, which are often well over $1,000 a night. But while I may not be rich in the traditional sense, I'm absolutely swimming in Hilton points. On top of that, I have Diamond status from my Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card. So, my goal was to get the best possible deal to maximize the Hilton Honors program.

I found the best availability for our six-night stay at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, a popular resort destination for many in the points-and-miles game and one of Hilton's top luxury properties. However, standard award nights were running as high as 140,000 points a night. While I could book a five-night stay to take advantage of Hilton's fifth night free benefit, I had a different plan in mind.

Floating my Hilton stash

Instead of making a six-night reservation, I booked six separate one-night stays with points. But I had no intention of keeping those reservations long-term. My plan was to lock in award space early with points, then replace nights later with Hilton free night certificates as I earned them.

I floated 840,000 Hilton points as collateral. According to AwardWallet's valuations, that's worth close to $5,000. Whenever I earned one, I would make a booking using the free night certificate and cancel the points booking for that date. I booked the stay just over a year in advance, giving me ample time to replace all six nights with free nights.

I also had the certainty that my dates were locked in if standard award rates weren't available when I had a new free night certificate to use.

How I Earned Free Night Certificates

So how did I manage to earn six free night certificates? Credit: Hilton</enter>

How I timed earning my Hilton free night certificates

To use multiple free night certificates for the same stay, I had to pay close attention to how I timed earning them. I booked the stay in July 2025 for the following summer in mid-July 2026. The easiest to plan were the anniversary free night certificates from our Aspire cards. I received those in August and October 2025, which I used to replace the weekend nights, as I figured those would be the first nights that might lose availability.

At the time, I was generating significant spending on our cards. For both of our Surpass cards, I had already spent close to — but not over — $15,000 in the year. I also spent close to $30,000 on my Aspire by that point. Once I was just under a year from my desired stay dates, I crossed the spending threshold on all three cards. All three certificates arrived quickly.

Lastly, I focused all my spending on one of our Surpass cards in early 2026 to earn the final free night certificate I needed. All in all, the free night certificates easily saved me over $10,000 in cash rate costs.

It's very important that you don't cross the spending threshold until you are less than a year from the date you want to actually stay at your desired property. While Amex's spending tracker updates regularly, I recommend keeping detailed records to avoid accidentally earning the free night certificate a few days earlier than you need it.

But I Still Need To Save More

While having a mountain of Hilton points helped me safely lock in all six nights with free night certificates, I'm still going to have significant expenses when I get there. For example, we need to take a seaplane to and from the hotel, which will cost almost $1,400. Looking at the menus, I could expect to pay over $300 per person in many cases. In short, the work isn't done yet if I want to avoid paying a small fortune while I'm there.

Hilton Diamond status

With the insanely high food costs, Hilton Diamond status will be massively important. We'll get free breakfast and a free cocktail hour every day, which could save us several hundred dollars. I can easily justify this year's annual fee on my Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, from what eating one less meal and getting a couple of free drinks will save us over the trip.

Hilton credits and offers

Hilton property credits are among my favorite credit card perks. So, for this entire year, I've banked all of our Hilton credits this way. I also stacked an Amex offer on my Business Platinum, getting $250 off $1,000 in spend at a Conrad property. I'll have all of the Q3 credits available to spend when I get there, plus over $2,200 in credits.

The seaplane charges will eat up a significant portion of that, but I'll still have a robust credit to offset much of what I'll spend on-property.

Hilton Experiences

But wait! Since we have more Hilton points than we can spend, we decided to burn a chunk of them through Hilton Honors Experiences. However, since I have more points than I can spend and can easily replenish them, these unique experiences make it easier to disregard their value. This is one of the rare instances where I'd rather take a poor value over spending several hundred dollars in cash. Here's what I redeemed points for:

One-hour Cocktails Under the Sea Experience at Ithaa Undersea Restaurant (25,000 points each)

A Maldivian Culinary Adventure for Two, which includes: a two-course lunch at our choice of Mandhoo Spa Restaurant, Ufaa by Jereme Leung, or Rangali Bar Restaurant; dinner at our choice of Sunset Grill, Mandhoo Spa Restaurant, Ufaa by Jereme Leung, Vilu Restaurant, or The Atoll Market Restaurant; and an array of soft drinks and water included for both lunch and dinner (100,000 points)

A Tranquil Massage for Two: 60-minute couples massage (150,000 points)

While I may have redeemed for under a cent per point, the cash prices for these were significantly higher than I'm willing to pay. These are all things I wouldn't have done otherwise, so I consider these points well spent.

My out-of-pocket has dropped significantly

By burning my Hilton points and credits and maximizing our status, I'm able to drastically reduce what I'll actually owe at the end of the trip. This will likely allow us the freedom to overspend on another meal or experience, since we know we won't have an astronomical bill when we check out.

Bottom Line

I'm so excited to finally get to the Maldives. I'm even more grateful to put my knowledge of points and miles to work, making this luxurious stay much more affordable and manageable. Hopefully, the way I put my trip together can inspire you and give you ideas for saving on a trip there in the future.

By combining points, free night certificates, statement credits, and elite benefits, our Maldives stays that would cost thousands have become substantially more affordable.

Page Contents

Getting the Best Deal on Reservations

Floating my Hilton stash

How I Earned Free Night Certificates

How to earn Hilton free night certificates

What to know about Hilton free night certificates

How I timed earning my Hilton free night certificates

But I Still Need To Save More

Hilton Diamond status

Hilton credits and offers

Hilton Experiences

My out-of-pocket has dropped significantly

Bottom Line

Planning a stay in the Maldives can cost thousands per night — but Hilton points and free night certificates can change the equation.
