Right on the heels of rolling out some major changes to how you earn miles on paid tickets (spoiler: you\u2019ll earn the most by having status and a United credit card<\/a>) \u2014 United Airlines has announced even more changes. But this time in the form of what it\u2019s calling \u201ctiered fare categories\u201d for Polaris business class and Premium Plus.<\/p>\n

In theory, you\u2019ll have more options at different price points. But in reality, these new fare options likely mean you\u2019ll have to pay more for the same benefits you get today.<\/p>\n

Let me explain.<\/p>\n

United Airlines Is Introducing “Tiered Fare Categories”<\/span><\/h2>\n

According to a press release from United Airlines<\/a> dated April 3, 2026<\/strong>, the airline is set to introduce a \u201cnew tiered fare structure that will make it easier for customers to find the flight experience that best matches their preferences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Starting in select markets this month \u2014 and expanding to additional long-haul international, transcontinental U.S., and longer Hawaii flights later this year \u2014 you\u2019ll begin to see additional unbundled options for both United Polaris and Premium Plus tickets.<\/p>\n

United plans to introduce a \u201cBase\u201d ticket option for both Polaris and Premium Plus. These fares will come with fewer benefits, less flexibility, no refundability, and more fees.<\/p>\n

To give you a sense of how the Base option compares to higher-priced fares \u2014 Standard and Flexible \u2014 here\u2019s a look at what\u2019s expected for Polaris business class (available on international, transcontinental U.S., and long-haul Hawaii routes):<\/p>\n

As mentioned, Base options should begin appearing as soon as this month, and they\u2019ll be positioned to the left of the Standard option in the booking flow.<\/p>\n

Making Sense of United's Premium Fare Unbundling<\/span><\/h2>\n

For U.S. airlines, “unbundled” premium cabin fares are still a relatively new concept. They\u2019ve long been common in economy cabins, where they\u2019ve helped airlines compete with low-cost carriers at lower price points while also offering them the ability to capture additional spend from business travelers and leisure travelers willing to pay for extra perks.<\/p>\n

But today, as any airline executive will tell you, demand is strongest for premium products. That\u2019s part of why United recently rolled out an \u201cElevated\u201d Boeing 787-9<\/a> with 64 premium seats.<\/p>\n

And to fill those cabins, United will need to attract more than one type of traveler willing to spend more to sit up front.<\/p>\n

With these new tiered fare categories, United can offer a seat in Polaris business class or Premium Plus at a lower \u201cBase\u201d price point and win over travelers who don\u2019t care about lounge access, flexibility, or refunds.<\/p>\n

But for travelers who do want those benefits, United will happily take more of your money to provide them. And that\u2019s really the crux of it. You\u2019ll be able to pick the fare that aligns with the benefits you value.<\/p>\n

That said, it\u2019s probably unrealistic to expect these \u201cBase\u201d fares to be meaningfully cheaper than current prices \u2014 even if airfare broadly declines once fuel costs come down to earth.<\/p>\n

Instead, you\u2019ll likely continue paying similar rates for entry-level fares, while Standard and Flexible fares go even higher.<\/p>\n

Defeating United's New Base Fares<\/span><\/h2>\n

If there\u2019s any good news, it\u2019s that you can still defeat a couple of the restrictive elements of United\u2019s new Base fares. And a lot of that starts with carrying the right United credit card<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For instance, if you regularly book Polaris business class and value United Club access<\/a> before departure or on a layover, you could book the cheaper Base fare and instead carry the United Club\u2120 Card<\/a> (Rates & Fees<\/a>). As a cardholder, you and your eligible travel companions can access United Club locations worldwide, regardless of the fare you book.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s even possible that the savings from booking a single Base fare instead of a Standard fare could cover the card\u2019s $695 annual fee \u2014 or at least offset a large portion of it.<\/p>\n
