The Chase Sapphire Preferred\u00ae<\/sup> Card<\/a> (Rates & Fees<\/a>) is one of the most popular travel rewards cards out there. Odds are, you are either currently a cardholder or have been one in the past.<\/p>\n

One of its many benefits is a 10% cardmember anniversary bonus \u2014 earn 10% of your total spending from the previous cardmember year as Chase Ultimate Rewards<\/a> points. In other words, if you spend $25,000 on your card in one year, you'll earn 2,500 bonus Ultimate Rewards points.<\/p>\n

However, we have confirmation from Chase that this benefit will soon be removed. Here's what to know.<\/p>\n

Chase to Sunset the Sapphire Preferred Anniversary Bonus<\/span><\/h2>\n

Updates spread like wildfire in the points and miles community. Someone on Reddit posted<\/a> that they received a notification in their Chase app that the Sapphire Preferred‘s anniversary bonus would retire on October 1, 2026.<\/p>\n

This quickly appeared on all the major news outlets, but when we attempted to verify, no one from the AwardWallet team found a notification in their Chase app. The terms and conditions of the benefit on the application page also hadn't been updated.<\/p>\n

We reached out to Chase for comment, and a spokesperson replied with the following:<\/p>\n

“This update appeared early in our app. The benefit will be discontinued as we regularly evaluate and update our benefits based on cardmember feedback and what benefits resonate most. We look forward to sharing additional updates to the Sapphire Preferred card in the near term.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, yes, the anniversary bonus is going away, but we weren't supposed to find out just yet. Interestingly, Chase is also teasing that additional updates to the Sapphire Preferred are coming soon. A notable omission, though, is the date in which the anniversary bonus is going away.<\/p>\n

Hopefully, these updates don't follow the 2025 refresh of the Chase Sapphire Reserve\u00ae<\/sup><\/a> (Rates & Fees<\/a>), which saw a massive increase in annual fee in exchange for more coupon-style credits that are challenging to maximize.<\/p>\n

The lost value from removing the anniversary bonus will depend on how much you use your card. If you only put $10,000 worth of purchases on your card each year, your anniversary bonus is only 1,000 points. AwardWallet users typically redeem Ultimate Rewards points for 2.01\u00a2 apiece<\/a>, making 1,000 points equal roughly $20.10. Ultimately, $20 is $20, but it's likely not the reason you have the card in the first place.<\/p>\n

Bottom Line<\/span><\/h2>\n

Losing benefits isn't fun. However, unless you put all of your spending on your Sapphire Preferred, losing the anniversary bonus likely won't have much impact. There are many things about the card that make it great, but its earning potential outside of dining purchases is subpar compared to other travel rewards cards<\/a>. Keep your eye out for additional Sapphire Preferred updates coming soon.<\/p>\n
