Starting in early 2027, American Airlines will install Starlink Performance Aero Terminals across its entire mainline fleet of more than 1,000 aircraft to deliver speeds of up to 1 Gbps.<\/p>\n<p>Here's what we know so far about the American Airlines Starlink rollout.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"American_Airlines_Starlink_Rollout\">American Airlines Starlink Rollout<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The rollout of &#8220;the fastest Wi-Fi in the sky&#8221; was initially planned to cover more than 500 aircraft in American\u2019s Airbus narrowbody fleet, including incoming A321neo and A321XLR aircraft.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">However, American's October 8th announcement <\/span>changes that plan to cover the entire mainline fleet \u2014 doubling the initial rollout.<\/p>\n<p>Installation will start in early 2027, though we don't yet have a target completion date. Until then, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/awardwallet.com\/airlines\/american-aadvantage\/american-airlines-wifi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Wi-Fi is free on most American Airlines flights for AAdvantage<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> members<\/a>, sponsored by AT&T. On flights without free Wi-Fi, or for non-members, Wi-Fi can cost upwards of $35. The Starlink press release didn't mention whether access will also be complimentary for AAdvantage members. Within a few years, all those passengers will enjoy high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi on all American Airlines flights. That includes every aircraft:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>500+ Airbus narrowbodies<\/li>\n<li>400+ Boeing narrowbodies<\/li>\n<li>130+ Boeing widebodies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>American Airlines will also take delivery of more than 300 new mainline aircraft in the coming years, and those will also get Starlink Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n<p>For years, airline Wi-Fi has often been viewed as expensive, inconsistent, and barely capable of supporting basic browsing. Streaming movies, joining Zoom meetings, or uploading large files at 35,000 feet often resulted in buffering, dropped connections, or complete frustration. Starlink aims to change that entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional satellite internet providers rely on satellites positioned far above Earth in geostationary orbit. Instead, Starlink operates thousands of satellites in near-Earth orbit. Because these satellites are much closer to Earth, they reduce the lag time users experience when using Wi-Fi.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"What_Does_This_Mean_for_Passengers\">What Does This Mean for Passengers?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Once Starlink is installed across the entire American Airlines mainline fleet, passengers on all American Airlines flights will experience internet speeds and reliability far beyond what has traditionally been available onboard commercial aircraft. The new Performance Aero Terminals offer up to 1 Gbps per terminal. With that, you can stream in HD, join conference calls, or even play your favorite game.<\/p>\n<p>The move also reflects a growing battle among airlines to offer the best onboard connectivity experience. Just as importantly, it provides the foundation for future innovations that will further enhance the customer experience.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It seems like just yesterday (it was) that United was pointing out it had better in-flight Wi-Fi than Delta and American Airlines, but this announcement changes that.<\/p>\n<p>Several airlines have already adopted Starlink technology, including Hawaiian Airlines, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/awardwallet.com\/airlines\/qatar-airways-wifi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Qatar<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/awardwallet.com\/airlines\/united-mileageplus\/united-starlink-wifi\/\" rel=\"noopener\">United Airlines<\/a> on select aircraft. Customer reactions across the industry have been positive, particularly regarding streaming quality and stable connections.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Final_Thoughts\">Final Thoughts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For frequent flyers and points enthusiasts, this announcement could matter even more.
