Earning British Airways elite status won't get any easier anytime soon. The airline announced it will increase the tier points required to earn elite status and slash tier point earnings on select fares. Luckily, this double whammy won't take effect until April 1, 2027, so you have time to adjust.<\/p>\n

Let's go over the details.<\/p>\n

British Airways Makes It Harder To Earn Status<\/span><\/h2>\n

Higher tier points requirements<\/span><\/h3>\n

Unlike loyalty programs that follow a calendar year, the British Airways elite collection year goes from April 1 to March 31. Starting April 1, 2027<\/strong>, you'll need more tier points<\/a> to reach status,\u00a0according to the airline's website<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\n\n\t\n\t\n\t

Bronze remains unchanged at 3,500 tier points. However, Silver increases from 7,500 tier points to 8,000, while Gold increases from 20,000 to 21,000. This applies to next year's qualification period; it doesn't affect this year's requirements. These are relatively minor changes, but still worth knowing.<\/p>\n

Luckily, segment-based qualification remains unchanged: take 25 flights with a British Airways code to become Bronze and 50 to become Silver.<\/p>\n

Lower tier points earnings<\/span><\/h3>\n

On top of rising qualification requirements, British Airways is slashing tier point bonuses on select fares, including premium Club World and First fares. Pair lower earnings with increased qualification requirements, and it's getting much harder to reach status. These earning changes take effect for flights booked on or after November 25, 2026, for travel from April 1, 2027.<\/p>\n

Travelers typically earn 1 tier point per eligible pound spent, plus a fixed number of bonus tier points depending on the fare and route.<\/p>\n

Per the airline's website<\/a>, passengers will earn the following tier point bonuses on long-haul\u00a0flights<\/em>:<\/p>\n
