You can use (redeem) them for all kinds of things, including award flights, seat upgrades, lounge memberships, and onboard food and drink purchases. Having a ton of miles doesn't necessarily mean you've earned elite status, since you can get them from a credit card sign-up bonus or other activity that doesn't count toward earning status.

Miles flown: These refer to the number of miles flown during a flight — at least theoretically. Rather than referring to how many miles you actually fly, this term focuses on the distance between the origin and destination airports. This is important for Million Miler progress and mileage earnings on most partners.

Loyalty Points: This is the sole metric used to determine your American Airlines AAdvantage elite status.

AAdvantage Elite Status Qualification

Before 2022, you had to keep track of three metrics to earn elite status with American Airlines AAdvantage: Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM), Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQD), and Elite Qualifying Segments (EQS). Everything about how you earn your status is based on Loyalty Points.

Screenshot of American Airlines</enter>

You need to earn the following Loyalty Points amounts to earn AAdvantage elite status:

Gold: 40,000 Loyalty Points

Platinum: 75,000 Loyalty Points

Platinum Pro: 125,000 Loyalty Points

Executive Platinum: 200,000 Loyalty Points

Earning Loyalty Points

In short, 1 eligible AAdvantage mile equals 1 Loyalty Point. Whenever a premium cabin on a flight within North America has empty seats, American Airlines uses a system of status and seniority to upgrade AAdvantage elite members to fill them. Note that you are ineligible for an upgrade if you book a basic economy fare.

The primary way American Airlines determines which passenger gets an upgrade is by their elite status tier. The higher your elite status, the higher you'll appear on the upgrade list. When multiple passengers share the same tier level, American Airlines first prioritizes travelers using Systemwide and mileage award upgrades over complimentary upgrades. The final tiebreaker is the number of Loyalty Points earned over the past 12 months.

The earliest your upgrade will be confirmed depends on your status level. Top-tier Executive Platinum members have complimentary upgrades confirmed up to 100 hours before departure. Upgrades at the airport are automatic — gate agents do not need to clear them manually, and the computer completes the upgrade process 40 minutes before take-off. That means upgrades should be complete before boarding begins.

Starting August 25, 2026, American Airlines will limit elite upgrades to the premium economy cabin on select routes. Sadly this means elites will no longer get upgrades to lie-flat business class products on these routes.

Credit: JT Genter/AwardWallet</enter>

Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs)

Upon reaching set Loyalty Point thresholds (starting at 175,000 Loyalty Points), AAdvantage members can choose Systemwide Upgrades as a Loyalty Point Reward. These can be used to upgrade one cabin class on a one-way itinerary with up to three individual flight segments. The flights may be operated by American Airlines or British Airways, but at least one segment must be marketed by American Airlines to be eligible. You cannot use a Systemwide Upgrade on a basic economy ticket.

When you're flying with American, how you use your Systemwide Upgrade depends on the aircraft's layout. In a 3-cabin aircraft, you can upgrade from economy or premium economy to business. In a 2-cabin aircraft, you can upgrade from economy to first for domestic flights or from economy to business for short-haul international flights. When you're flying with British Airways, you can upgrade economy to premium economy, premium economy to business, and business to first.

For example, say you book a one-way economy ticket from Phoenix (PHX) to London (LHR) via Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW). If upgrade space is available, you can upgrade your class of service to business class for both segments immediately. This would require just one systemwide upgrade, since it has only two segments on a single ticket.

One downside is that Systemwide Upgrades aren't valid indefinitely. All newly issued or unused SWUs remain valid through March 31 of the year following the status membership year. Still, it might make sense to wait until you're confident you'll use them before selecting SWUs as your Loyalty Point Reward. Availability for upgrades can sometimes be limited, and you’ll need to choose SWUs as your reward first before you can search for eligible flights. However, SWUs can be very lucrative if you can find upgrade space.

Loyalty Point Rewards

Speaking of Loyalty Point Rewards, American Airlines incentivizes travelers to choose American over other carriers by offering benefits long before you ever reach elite status.

At 15,000 Loyalty Points, you will earn your first Loyalty Point Reward.
