You can use (redeem) them for all kinds of things, including award flights, seat upgrades, lounge memberships, and, as of 2025, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/news\/american-aadvantage\/use-aa-miles-for-food-and-drink-onboard\/\" rel=\"noopener\">onboard food and drink purchases<\/a>. The membership period starts the day you qualify and runs through the next calendar year and all the way to March 31 of the year after that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since that can be confusing, here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A member earns 75,000 Loyalty Points during the qualification period from March 1, 2025 to February 28, 2026. That member will earn <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/airlines\/american-aadvantage\/platinum-status\/\" rel=\"noopener\">AAdvantage Platinum status<\/a> until March 31, 2027. From March 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027, this member would need to requalify for status for the ensuing year.<\/li>\n<li>In the following qualification period (March 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027), this person only qualifies for Gold status. The Platinum status would expire on March 31, 2027. Whenever a premium cabin has empty seats, American Airlines uses a system of status and seniority to upgrade AAdvantage elite members to fill them.<\/p>\n<p>The primary way AA determines which passenger gets an upgrade is by their elite status tier. The higher your elite status, the higher you'll appear on the upgrade list. When there are multiple passengers with the same tier level, American Airlines first prioritizes travelers on paid flights, then those traveling on awards. The final tiebreaker is the number of Loyalty Points earned over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>Airport upgrades are automatic. Gate agents do not need to clear them manually, and the upgrade process is completed by the computer 40 minutes before take-off. This would require just one systemwide upgrade since it has only two segments on one ticket.<\/p>\n<p>One downside is that Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs) aren't valid indefinitely, though recent updates have extended their lifespan. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/news\/american-aadvantage\/program-changes-2025\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Effective March 2025<\/a>, all newly issued or unused SWUs remain valid through March 31 of the following status-membership year. In practice, this means you could have up to about 25 months to redeem each certificate, depending on when it's issued.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it might make sense to wait until you're confident you'll use them before selecting SWUs as your Loyalty Point Reward. Well, I've got good news and bad news.<\/p>\n<p>Let's start with the bad news. Unlike Delta and Southwest, AA doesn't offer direct status matches for elite members from other airlines. So, even if you're a Delta Diamond or United Premier 1K, AA won't offer you a free match to AAdvantage Executive Platinum.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Instant_Status_Pass\">Instant Status Pass<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The good news, however, is that AA does offer its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/news\/american-aadvantage\/aa-status-match\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Instant Status Pass<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<p>By logging into your AA account and checking <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com\/aadvantage-program\/profile\/promotions\" rel=\"noopener\">your promotions<\/a> section, you can check whether you're targeted. You can also call the AA call center (888-697-5636 or 800-882-8880) to find out if you have been targeted and register for the promotion. When calling, note that some travelers report needing to pay to enroll in an AAdvantage Instant Status Pass.<\/p>\n<p>Once you start, you'll need to meet set Loyalty Point thresholds every four months to keep your status.
