Here's what you need to know to earn 5X <a href=\"https:\/\/awardwallet.com\/credit-cards\/amex-membership-rewards\/\">Membership Rewards<\/a> points on airfare with your <a data-ccid=\"4028089\" href=\"\/blog\/link\/CR-ThePlatinumCardfromAmericanExpress\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\">Platinum Card<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"How_To_Earn_5X_Points_on_Airfare_with_the_Platinum_Card\">How To Earn 5X Points on Airfare with the Platinum Card<sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The personal and business versions of the Platinum Card<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> have different earning structures. What matters is that the airline is the merchant of record. For example, the charge posts to your statement as American or Delta, not as a middleman like Expedia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flights booked through American Express Travel.<\/strong> You'll also earn 5X if you book your flight through AmexTravel.com, the Amex Travel app, or by phone. Foreign carriers count as long as you book the ticket directly or through Amex Travel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/awardwallet.com\/credit-cards\/amex-membership-rewards\/international-airline-program\/\">Platinum Member Airfares<\/a>, the discounted premium-cabin fares available to cardmembers through Amex Travel, also earn 5X.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Which_Airfare_Purchases_Don8217t_Earn_5X_Points\">Which Airfare Purchases Don't Earn 5X Points?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You'll want to be careful about exactly how you're booking airfare. While it may not seem like a big deal, if you don't do it right, you'll cost yourself rewards. Here are some purchases that may not earn 5X points:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Booking through an online travel agency.<\/strong> Examples of online travel agencies include Expedia, Priceline, Booking.com, and Kayak. A good rule of thumb: if the OTA collects your payment, you'll only earn 1X. While some OTA bookings do pass the charge straight to the airline (which would earn 5X), there's often no way to know that before you book.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Corporate travel agencies and consolidators.<\/strong> The same logic applies here. If your employer's travel desk is the merchant of record, you won't earn 5X points.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Charter flights and private jets.<\/strong> Charter flights and private jet flights don't earn the 5X bonus and are explicitly excluded from Amex's terms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flights packaged as part of tours, cruises, or vacation bundles.<\/strong> Amex also excludes vacation packages, prepaid flight and hotel packages booked over the phone, cruises, ticketing and cancellation fees, and interest charges.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Airline gift cards.<\/strong> This isn't a passenger flight purchase and would only earn 1X.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The general logic is that Amex\u00a0rewards you for\u00a0<strong>buying a plane ticket<\/strong>, not for spending money with an airline. While this may sound similar, it's an important distinction to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Do_Award_Taxes_and_Fees_Earn_5X\">Do Award Taxes and Fees Earn 5X?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Generally, yes, but it's not guaranteed. Taxes and fees on award tickets may qualify for 5X points when charged directly by the airline and processed as an eligible airfare purchase. However, separate ticketing and service fees are excluded from the bonus category.<\/p>\n<p>When an airline processes award taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges as an eligible airfare purchase, you should earn 5X points. Keep in mind that how these charges are processed can vary, particularly with partner award bookings.
