I\u2019ve been on many trips throughout my childhood and teenage years. In 2018, I went to China and Taiwan with my dad. In the summer of 2019, our family spent a few weeks in Spain and Portugal, just to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>Now that I\u2019m older, I\u2019ve been working on earning my own points and miles. You may think that since I\u2019m a teenager, it wouldn\u2019t be possible to earn points and miles &#8212; but actually is possible!<\/p>\n<p>There are a variety of ways that teenagers can earn points and miles, so you can pick the one that works best for you and your family. Let's review your options.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Age_Limits_On_Enrolling_In_Loyalty_Programs\">Age Limits On Enrolling In Loyalty Programs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be 18 to enroll in a loyalty program. Most programs allow you to open an account at any age with permission from your parents. Some people enroll their children when they are only a couple of days old. This way, they can start earning miles at a very young age.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason why it\u2019s so great to start early is that most <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/travel\/loyalty-program-expiration-policies\/\" rel=\"noopener\">airline miles don't expire<\/a> until you reach a certain age. Here are a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/airlines\/american-aadvantage\/do-american-airlines-miles-expire\/\">American Airlines AAdvantage miles don\u2019t expire until you turn 21<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/airlines\/air-canada-aeroplan\/do-aeroplan-miles-expire\/\">Air Canada Aeroplan points don\u2019t expire until you turn 18<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/airlines\/delta-skymiles\/do-delta-miles-expire\/\">Delta SkyMiles don\u2019t expire at all<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/airlines\/united-mileageplus\/do-united-miles-expire\/\">United MileagePlus miles don\u2019t expire<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once you reach a certain age, your miles will start to follow the company\u2019s standard expiration policy. So, make sure you <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/features\/how-to-track-points-using-awardwallet\/\" rel=\"noopener\">track your rewards through AwardWallet<\/a> so you'll know when your miles are in danger of expiring.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Earning_Miles_By_Flying\">Earning Miles By Flying<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With airline tickets, the person who is actually flying will earn miles regardless of who booked the ticket. Miles are earned \u201cbutt-in-seat\u201d, meaning whoever\u2019s butt is in the seat gets the miles. It doesn't matter who reserves or pays for the flight.<\/p>\n<p>With hotels, it\u2019s a bit different. There are no \u201cbody-in-bed\u201d points. Usually, whoever books the hotel room earns the points for themselves. It's even possible to book a hotel room for someone else and still earn points to your account. That is one good reason to sign your child up for a frequent flyer account. When they travel with you, then they can earn miles. You can\u2019t earn airline miles for their ticket, only they can earn miles with an account in their name.<\/p>\n<p>Earning miles by flying is one of the easiest ways to boost your balance. All you have to do is book a ticket somewhere &#8212; or have someone do it for you &#8212; and earn miles as you enjoy your trip!<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Ways_To_Earn_Points_And_Miles_Besides_Traveling\">Ways To Earn Points And Miles Besides Traveling<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you aren't able to travel much yet but still want to earn points and miles, there are a lot of other ways to do so. Here are a few ways to earn miles and points without traveling that teenagers might be able to take advantage of:<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Credit_Cards\">Credit Cards<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I think one of the best ways to earn miles is by signing up for an airline's credit card. Some airlines give you miles and\/or points just for signing up for their card, and you get even more for using it. You won\u2019t be able to <a href=\"\/credit-cards\/credit-card-for-teens\/\">apply for your own credit card until you\u2019re at least 18<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But you might be able to be an authorized user on your parents\u2019 account. The miles you earn as an authorized user will go to your parents\u2019 account, but it\u2019s still helping to grow your family\u2019s miles and points balance. Plus, it can really help <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/credit-cards\/how-is-credit-score-calculated\/\" rel=\"noopener\">build your credit score<\/a> from an early age.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Shopping_Portals\">Shopping Portals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Another thing you can do is take advantage of <a href=\"\/shopping\/beginners-guide-to-shopping-portals\/\">online shopping portals<\/a>. For those unfamiliar, shopping portals let you earn miles by clicking through a website link tied to a mileage program. All you have to do is go to the shopping portal website instead of going to the retailer\u2019s website directly. The best part of this is that the miles you earn from shopping portals can go into your own account instead of your parents\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Booking_With_Partners\">Booking With Partners<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You can also earn miles by booking your hotel or rental car through the airline\u2019s website. Many airlines and hotel chains partner with other travel companies. You can earn extra points by <a href=\"\/travel\/new-member-bonuses\/\">booking your travel through partners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Family_Pooling\">Family Pooling<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>No, I\u2019m not talking about swimming. Family pooling means that some airlines allow families to share their miles and points with each other. Some examples of <a href=\"\/travel\/which-programs-allow-free-points-sharing\/\">loyalty programs that offer family pooling are<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Air Canada Aeroplan<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/news\/flying-blue\/family-pooling\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Air France\/KLM Flying Blue<\/a><\/li>\n<li>British Airways Avios<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/airlines\/emirates-family-account\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Emirates Skywards<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Etihad Guest<\/li>\n<li>Frontier Airlines<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/hotels\/hilton-honors\/pool-hilton-points\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Hilton Honors<\/a><\/li>\n<li>IHG One Rewards<\/li>\n<li>JetBlue TrueBlue<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/travel\/family-points-pooling\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Lufthansa Miles & More<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Marriott Bonvoy<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/travel\/family-points-pooling\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Singapore KrisFlyer<\/a><\/li>\n<li>World of Hyatt<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/travel\/family-points-pooling\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/travel\/family-points-pooling\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"\/news\/flying-blue\/family-pooling\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Family pooling is a lot more common among hotel programs, but recently, there are more and more airlines that offer it. So, if one of your parents does a lot of traveling for work, you might be able to take advantage of their points.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"When_It_Might_Be_Better_To_Have_Your_Parents_Earn_Points_Instead\">When It Might Be Better To Have Your Parents Earn Points Instead<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s good to try and earn your own points and miles. But, it might make more sense to have one person have all the points instead of having a few hundred points in several different accounts. If they\u2019re all in different accounts, that might be a hassle when you\u2019re trying to book something.<\/p>\n<p>If everyone in your family only has a few miles or points in their account, you might not be able to book any kind of award. That\u2019s why family pooling is such a good option because it makes it easier to get enough points to book an award.<\/p>\n<p>As you get older, you might want to take more control over your points and miles, and that\u2019s a great idea. You can be in charge of your own account and use your own points and miles. When you\u2019re older, earn more money, and have more freedom, it might be easier to earn more miles and points on your own.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"The_Bottom_Line\">The Bottom Line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As I get older, I\u2019m excited to be able to travel independently and use my own points and miles. The details of how to sign up for an account for a minor usually depends on which airline you\u2019re using, so make sure to check the airline\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><span id=\"Can_I_earn_United_miles_for_my_child\">Can I earn United miles for my child?<\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Yes, you can set up a MileagePlus account for your child so that they can start earning miles.
