Earning miles is straightforward. Spending them is less so.
Overall, the ratio between miles earned and the miles required for awards is not favorable. For instance, you need to fly a long distance five to six times in business class before you have earned enough miles to afford an upgrade from economy to business.
Getting an award is relatively easy for economy seats, but not so for other classes. Booking an award flight in business class is next to impossible. Booking an upgrade to business in advance works on Tuesday / Wednesday flights, but much less easily during the rest of the week.
Regarding other benefits, partners and possible awards are probably appealing to residents of the UAE, but not particularly for travellers residing outside the Gulf region.
Emirates' online services are surprisingly bad and unreliable. Access to the Emirates and Skywards websites is unpredictable, and often very slow. Certain functions only work in Internet Explorer, but not in Firefox.
