Marriott is 2nd choice for me (1st is Hyatt). I do not understand their brand variety, extremely complicated. Quality amongst hotels varies so drastically and really depends on the local management.
I do not understand the method of collecting points. At a Residence Inn I only get half the points (5 for the dollar) compared to a Courtyard (10 for the dollar), although the Courtyard rate may be lower.
They claim to be able to use rewards any time "Instant redemption", but that does not work! (Could not use it at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas).
Rolling over of nights above the tier level and having them count to the next year's tier level is excellent!
I am Platinum, but the difference from Gold is not visible, except, that I get a 50% bonus instead of 25%. Also Gold usually gets Concierge access.
Concierge quality varies drastically as well.
Their website is very difficult to navigate, finding hotels is not really easy.

Marriott claims to have "no black out dates." However they do have what they call "inventory control days." The end result is the same in that you are not able to book certain hotels during holiday's. For example, two years in a row I have tried booking over the Christmas/New Year's Holiday in the Grand Cayman to no avail. Multiple emails and phone calls went without return for months. Today, I did finally receive a phone call from a Marriott representative explaining he was sorry for my troubles and for no one getting back to me but I am still not able to book using rewards for the dates I wanted. I understand hotels blocking certain premium dates. What I don't accept is the lack of response and the deception on Marriott's part. If you make the claim "no black out dates" then it should be honored. Calling it by a different name (inventory control) does not make it right Marriott. We will see how Hilton compares as I have moved all my business since January to Hilton's. For the folks at Fairfield Inn Charlotte Gastonia, your personal service towards me and my dog has always been outstanding and greatly appreciated. Thank you. My recommendation for you as a pet friendly hotel remains.Maximum 2000 Characters

Concierge level always top notch. Hotel management treat guests with many points very well. Home away from home.

In general I like Marriott better than most other hotels. Apparently their points do not expire, according to their website:

http://www.marriott.com/news/renaissanceHotelsFact.mi

"Marriott Rewards points never expire. Membership is free."

All nice hotels, however, you'll spend a ton of money and get few free hotel stays

The best as far as I am concerned. You have an ability to redeem for much more than hotels and when you do choose the hotel rewards they are very easy. The points don't accrue as fast as say Hilton Honors, but in my eyes they are MUCH more valuble.
