If you've never heard of Sonder, it's a great time to familiarize yourself with this short-term rental company. Sonder and Marriott inked a long-term licensing agreement. Through of this agreement, you can now earn Marriott points, elite night credits, and more on Sonder apartment and hotel stays.

Here are all the details.

Sonder Properties Are Joining Marriott Bonvoy

As the August 2024 press release indicated, Sonder is going all-in on its integration into the Marriott Bonvoy program. Like most other brands that belong to Marriott Bonvoy, you can collect points, elite night credits, and elite bonus points when staying at Sonder's apartments and hotels, which is the newest perk of this partnership.

Sonder manages over 10,500 units (apartments plus hotels) in 45 cities worldwide. The bulk of its properties are in the United States, Canada, and Italy.

Around 9,000 units are expected to join Marriott Bonvoy by the end of 2024, and the remaining properties are expected to join at a later date. However, this partnership now has tangible benefits for Bonvoy members.

New: Earn and Redeem Marriott Points on Sonder Stays

Through the now-in-progress integration, Sonder is letting you add your Marriott Bonvoy number to reservations made on its website. Starting October 30, 2024, you can earn Marriott points and elite night credits on Sonder stays at the following rates:

  • Sonder Hotels
    • 10X points per dollar spent on room rate
    • One elite night credit per qualifying night
  • Sonder Apartments
    • 5X points per dollar spent on room rate
    • One elite night credit per qualifying night

If you're a Marriott Bonvoy elite member, your bonus point multiplier will apply as it does on a normal Marriott stay.

Additionally, Marriott is now letting members redeem points for Sonder stays — with a catch. To book an award stay, you'll need to call Sonder at 415-849-2740. It's unclear when redemptions will be made available online, but Marriott has indicated that the integration should be complete by early next year. It's reasonable to believe this includes online redemptions.

Final Thoughts

The Marriott Bonvoy portfolio is growing yet again. You can already earn and redeem points on virtually any type of hotel, resort, apartment, and more that matches your travel style. The integration of Sonder will give you even more options.

However, what stands out the most in this update is that you have to call Sonder to make redemptions. Not being able to see the rates on a screen is a little ominous, so it's hard to tell what is and isn't a good deal until we start getting data points.

But if you feel like redeeming your Marriott points for a Sonder stay right now, ensure you get a value you're comfortable with. On average, AwardWallet users redeem Marriott points for 0.94¢ apiece; hopefully, Sonder stays offer value that is greater than or equal to the average Marriott redemption. If you can't secure that, it might be a redemption worth passing on.
