Improvements to the Freedom Flex
No foreign transaction fees
As we first reported back in July, you can now use your Freedom Flex abroad without paying a foreign transaction fee. This is a fantastic update, as cardholders previously paid 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars. If you're spending a few weeks abroad, paying 3% in fees on every single transaction can quickly add up.

Advanced notice on 5% cash-back categories
You'll also now be able to view the Freedom Flex‘s 5% cash back categories one quarter in advance. Normally, cash back categories for the following quarter are announced on the 15th of the last month of the previous quarter. For instance, Chase just announced the Q4 2026 categories on September 15, 2026. However, we can already preview Q1 2027 cash back categories.
Q1 2027 quarterly cash back categories will include top streaming services and grocery stores (excluding Walmart and Target). This is also the first time that grocery stores will be featured in consecutive quarters. That means you can earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases from October 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027, up to the quarterly maximums.
Bottom Line
These updates might seem minor, but they are fairly revolutionary for Freedom Flex cardholders. The opportunity to earn 5% on rotating bonus categories (up to $1,500 per quarter), 5% on travel purchased through Chase, 3% on dining at restaurants and drugstore purchases and 1% on other eligible purchases — including purchases made abroad — is fantastic.
