A record high of nearly 24 million traveled from the U.S. to Europe in 2025, according to the Survey of International Air Travelers (SIAT). That is sure to be outdone once the 2026 numbers come in, and so U.S.-based airlines are doubling down. On the heels of United's announcement of a slew of new routes to Europe in the summer of 2027, American Airlines is following suit.
Although not as robust as United's, American is adding seven new routes to its 2027 summer schedule. Of those routes, three will be to new American destinations — Porto, Portugal (OPO); Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF); and Vienna, Austria (VIE). American becomes the first U.S. airline to fly nonstop to Vienna.
Additionally, American is adding routes to Amsterdam, Netherlands (AMS); Barcelona, Spain (BCN); and Nice, France (NCE). In all, this presents more great options for American Airlines flyers to get to Europe next summer.

American's 2027 Summer Route Expansion
This table shows all the upcoming routes to Europe with the start dates and aircraft that will be used. American will offer daily service on all the new summer 2027 routes with tickets available for purchase starting August 31.
Note: The table also shows the upcoming route from Chicago (ORD) to Tokyo (NRT) that begins next year. This was a route vacated by partner Japan Airlines that American subsequently picked up.
| Route | Start Date | Aircraft Type |
|---|---|---|
| Chicago (ORD) to Tokyo (NRT) | March 19 | Boeing 787-9 |
| New York (JFK) to Amsterdam (AMS) | March 28 | Airbus A321XLR |
| Philadelphia (PHL) to Porto (OPO) | March 28 | Airbus A321XLR |
| New York (JFK) to London (LHR) | Fourth daily flight starts March 28 | Boeing 787-9 with Flagship Suite® seats |
| Philadelphia (PHL) to Vienna (VIE) | May 6 | Airbus A321XLR |
| New York (JFK) to Nice, France (NCE) | May 6 | Airbus A321XLR |
| Charlotte (CLT) to Barcelona | May 27 | Boeing 777-200ER |
| Philadelphia (PHL) to Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF) | May 27 | Airbus A321neo |
The three new destinations will be flown on the Airbus A321XLR, as American is continually adding this aircraft to its fleet for routes just like these. As they add more aircraft going forward, we will see what new European destinations lie ahead for the Chicago-based airline.

American's New Destinations
American is targeting trendy cities with its 2027 expansion. Whether it be Iceland’s dramatic waterfalls and otherworldly landscapes or Porto’s colorful streets and incredible food and wine, travelers have much to explore. Plus, you can visit Vienna's grand palaces and classical music scene, or use it as a gateway to beautiful Hallstatt or to visit the Alps. These new destinations truly have it all. And with limited flights to these specific destinations — American will be the only U.S. carrier to Vienna — adding more flights is a huge win

Bottom Line
