Capital One just introduced a major change that could shake up your credit card strategy. For the first time, the issuer is imposing a 48-month “family rule” across its Venture lineup. That means you can now only earn one welcome bonus every four years between the Venture-branded cards.

This is a big deal. Until now, Capital One stood apart from issuers like American Express and Chase by letting travelers earn multiple Venture bonuses over time. With this update, Capital One joins the ranks of banks tightening bonus eligibility — limiting how often you can cash in on those lucrative new-card offers.

If you’ve opened any Venture-branded card in the past few years — or were planning to add one soon — you’ll want to pay close attention. Here’s exactly what’s changing and how it could affect your earning potential going forward.

Changes to Capital One Venture Welcome Offer Eligibility

Now, you will not be able to earn a welcome bonus on a Venture card, which includes the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, if you have earned a welcome bonus on a sibling card in the past 48 months.

Here's the specific language found in the terms and conditions for each card:

  • Capital One VentureOne: You are not eligible for this product if you have received a new cardmember bonus for the Capital One VentureOne card, the Capital One Venture card, or the Capital One Venture X card in the past 48 months.
  • Capital One VentureOne: You are not eligible for this product if you have received a new cardmember bonus for the Capital One Venture card or the Capital One Venture X card in the past 48 months.
  • Capital One Venture X: You are not eligible for this product if you have received a new cardmember bonus for the Capital One Venture card or the Capital One Venture X card in the past 48 months.

In other words, the language for the Capital One VentureOne is the most restrictive — if you've earned a welcome bonus on any of the Venture cards in the last four years, you won't be eligible for a new cardmember bonus. The Capital One Venture X and Capital One Venture are slightly better, only listing the other card as a restriction.

If this type of language sounds familiar, you're likely thinking about American Express. Amex has added several family restrictions over the past few years, including to the following cards:

Bottom Line

If you opened a Capital One Venture in the last couple of years but are ready to apply for the Capital One Venture X, you might want to wait. With the new language, you wouldn't be eligible for a sign-up bonus, which means you'd forfeit the opportunity to earn 75,000 bonus miles. This new language is disappointing for anyone who wants to change their current card lineup.
