Application Restrictions and Strategy

Navy Federal imposes several application restrictions on cardholders. You can only be the primary cardholder on up to three Navy Federal credit cards at a time. You can only be approved for one new credit card within a 90-day period. If you've already opened a card within the last 90 days, you will be automatically denied for a new card.

Home Equity Line Platinum credit cards and GO BIZ Rewards credit cards aren't included in the 3-card limit, so you can hold those and three other rewards cards at the same time.

In addition, to have a credit card from the Navy Federal Credit Union, you'll need to first be a member. To be eligible for membership, you must fall into one of the following categories: active duty, retired, or veteran servicemembers; family members; or Department of Defense civilians. If you qualify, you can submit an online membership application with your Social Security Number, government ID, current home address, and a method to fund your account.

Once you're a member, you'll be able to submit a credit card application.

Cards That Compete With the Navy Federal More Rewards Amex

If you don't think the Navy Federal More Rewards Amex is right for you, don't worry. There are plenty of other options, including several more through the Navy Federal Credit Union.

  • If you want to earn more on travel, consider the Visa Signature® Flagship Rewards Card. You'll earn 3X on travel and 2X on everything else, allowing you to quickly rack up points. Although you'll pay a $49 annual fee, you'll get plenty of value in return — a statement credit for an Amazon Prime membership and the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, and a variety of travel protections as a Visa Signature.
  • If you want to earn cash back, the Navy Federal Visa cashRewards Card could be a good fit. You'll earn up to 2% cash back on all purchases, and there's no limit to how much you can earn. You'll also receive a collision damage waiver, but there aren't a ton of additional cardholder benefits.
  • If you want transferable rewards, the Citi Strata℠ Card (Rates & Fees) might be an option. It has a similar earning potential, but allows you to access Citi's 21 transfer partners. This gives you a route to more lucrative redemptions. However, it charges foreign transaction fees, so it's not a great card to use abroad.
