Oneworld is continuing its alliance expansion. On the heels of Hawaiian Airlines joining in April, Philippine Airlines has been announced as the newest member, taking the alliance up to 16 members. This is great news for loyalists and frequent fliers of Oneworld's various partners, as it will expand the alliance's footprint in Southeast Asia.
Philippine Airlines to Join Oneworld Alliance in 2027
According to a Philippine Airlines release, the carrier will join the Oneworld alliance in 2027. Once it joins, Philippine Airlines will become the second Oneworld member based in Southeast Asia, alongside Malaysia Airlines.
Currently, Philippine Airlines operates flights from its hub in Manila (MNL) to the following North American destinations:
- Vancouver (YVR)
- Seattle (SEA)
- San Francisco (SFO)
- Los Angeles (LAX)
- Chicago (ORD)
- Toronto (YYZ)
- New York (JFK)

In addition, Philippine Airlines serves destinations throughout Southeast Asia, as far north as Japan, as well as Australia and the Middle East.
Qatar Airways announced a partnership with Philippine Airlines last year, perhaps serving as a precursor to the carrier's eventual Oneworld membership. That partnership already gives travelers limited access to Philippine Airlines award flights, as there is currently no way to transfer points directly to the Mabuhay Miles program.
For example, this Los Angeles-to-Manila business-class flight costs 110,000 Avios.

With Philippine Airlines becoming a full-fledged member of Oneworld, the possibility of booking a flight to Southeast Asia through other programs like Alaska Airlines Atmos, American Airlines AAdvantage, or Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is exciting. Plus, the use of benefits like baggage allowances and priority boarding will be another positive. As the official date gets closer, we expect to see more specific details as to how the partnership will function.

Bottom Line
Although we don't know the exact timing in 2027, Philippine Airlines' addition to the Oneworld alliance will give flyers even more options for getting to Asia using points and miles. This seemed to be in the tea leaves, as Philippine Airlines has recently been strengthening its relationship with Oneworld partners. This will definitely be a win for travelers to Asia.
We will monitor how easy and affordable it is to use Oneworld partner miles to fly Philippine Airlines once it officially joins the alliance.
