To celebrate the launch of one of its newest transfer partners, Capital One is simultaneously rolling out a limited-time transfer bonus. Through October 22, 2025, you can transfer Capital One miles to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank and receive a 30% bonus miles. Since transfer bonuses to JAL are rare, let’s look at how to make the most of this opportunity and what to consider before moving your miles.

Transfer Capital One Miles to Japan Airlines With a 30% Bonus

If you’re interested in traveling to Tokyo with points and miles — or continuing from Japan to other parts of Asia — this new transfer bonus can make it a little cheaper than usual. For the first month after adding Japan Airlines as a transfer partner, eligible Capital One cardholders can transfer miles to Mileage Bank with a 30% bonus. You can do so through October 22, 2025.

But before you get too excited, you need to know two things about this Capital One transfer partner:

  • New JAL Mileage Bank accounts have a seven-day waiting period before miles can be redeemed. If you open an account today and transfer miles after receiving your frequent flyer number, you won't be able to use them until seven days from now.
  • The standard transfer ratio is 2:1.5. With the 30% bonus, it becomes 2:1.95, which is effectively 0.975 JAL miles per Capital One mile. You still won't receive a full mile for every mile transferred, so do the math before transferring points.

Key terms

This transfer bonus is offered directly by Capital One, so you’ll see it show up in your account. Here are the key terms Capital One wants you to know about this bonus:

  • 30% transfer bonus runs now through 3:59 am Eastern Time on October 23, 2025.
  • Minimum transfer of 1,000 Capital One Miles (nets 976 JAL Mileage Bank miles after the bonus)
  • Transfer in increments of 100 Capital One Miles above that.
  • Rewards are typically transferred to your loyalty program within 24 hours, but in some cases may take longer.
  • Transfers are final, and then the miles are subject to JAL's expiration policy.

Ways to Redeem Japan Airlines Mileage Bank Miles

Japan Airlines uses a route-based award chart for flights it operates, with one chart for international travel and another for domestic travel. For partner awards, both Oneworld partners and JAL’s other partners have their own separate charts.

The Mileage Bank award charts for JAL-operated flights were devalued earlier this year, but there are still plenty of sweet spots to take advantage of, including:

  • Tokyo to Sydney for 45,000 Mileage Bank miles in business class.
    • Transfer 46,200 Capital One miles with a 30% bonus to book this award.
  • Tokyo to Paris, London, or Frankfurt for 55,000 Mileage Bank miles in business class.
    • Transfer 56,500 Capital One miles with a 30% bonus to book this award.
  • Tokyo to the continental United States for 27,000 Mileage Bank miles in economy class.
    • Transfer 27,700 Capital One miles with a 30% bonus to book this award.
  • Tokyo to the continental United States for 55,000 Mileage Bank miles in business class.
    • Transfer 56,500 Capital One miles with a 30% bonus to book this award.

You can also redeem JAL Mileage Bank miles for Japan Airlines first class. JAL applies seasonality to these awards, so the cost depends on when you travel. For flights between the United States and Tokyo, rates start at 110,000 miles plus taxes and fees, which comes out to 112,900 Capital One miles with the 30% transfer bonus.

That said, finding an available seat at the 110,000-mile low-season rate is much harder than at the 125,000-mile regular-season rate. For a regular-season award, you’d need to transfer 128,300 Capital One miles with the 30% bonus.

Compare JAL prices with other Oneworld programs before transferring and booking

One thing we like to emphasize before transferring points or miles is price shopping. A quick comparison can help you get the best bang for your buck.

For example, JAL’s first class rates aren’t unreasonable. It’s rare to find the 110,000-mile low-season rate for flights to or from the United States, but even 125,000 miles is a fairly good deal for the best in-flight experience JAL has to offer.

However, a few minutes of due diligence could save you a bundle. You can potentially book the same flight through another Capital One transfer partner, British Airways, for 103,000 Avios (Capital One transfers 1:1) plus about the same taxes and fees JAL charges. That’s a big savings, even with the current transfer bonus — and an even bigger one once the bonus ends.

Or, if you have American Airlines AAdvantage miles, JAL first class between the United States and Tokyo costs just 80,000 miles no matter where you begin your journey. That means you can add a domestic connection before your JAL flight for no extra cost.

While AAdvantage isn’t a Capital One transfer partner (see the programs that are), this example shows why price shopping matters. At best, it can save you a huge number of miles.

Need More JAL Mileage Bank Miles?

Before this year, U.S.-based travelers didn’t have many options to earn JAL Mileage Bank miles quickly. But with JAL joining as a transfer partner of a couple of programs, it’s now slightly easier to top off your account. So, if you transfer Capital One miles to JAL and still come up short for the award you want, you can turn to this growing list of transfer partners to cover the difference.

Bottom Line

Transfer bonuses to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank are rare, which makes this 30% bonus a great opportunity to do something interesting with your Capital One miles. Just remember, the offer runs through October 22, 2025 (and into the morning of October 23), and your Mileage Bank account must be at least seven days old before you can redeem miles. So, even if you don’t plan to transfer today, it’s worth signing up now (if you haven't already) to start the clock.
