Update: The changes mentioned in this post have taken effect. For specific details related to the Chase card(s) in your wallet, please refer to your updated Guide to Benefits.

Later this year, Chase will roll out improvements to the under-the-hood travel and purchase protections across its branded and co-branded credit card lineup. These upgraded benefits — plus a new way to file claims — will go live on October 1, 2024.

Here's what Chase cardholders need to know about these changes.

Travel and Purchase Protection Benefits Improvements for Chase Cardholders

Your credit card's travel insurance and extended warranty protections likely aren't as exciting as that free hotel night or complimentary checked bag perk. However, the not-as-flashy benefits are still worth knowing about; they could be the key to getting you out of a jam while traveling or cover you in the event an expensive item you purchased doesn't work as intended.

On that note, Chase is making some changes to the travel and purchase protection benefits lineup-wide. In other words, your ancillary card benefits are getting an upgrade effective October 1.

These updates follow Chase's switch of its benefits administrator and underwriter to Assurant and the creation of a new all-in-one website for cardholders to file claims and access benefits. The brand-new site will go live on the first of October. If you need to file a claim before then, Chase instructs you to continue to use the Eclaims site.

And we'll further preface the changes by noting that while benefits are allegedly coming to (or being upgraded on) several cards, you'll still be wise to check the new Guide to Benefits you'll get in the coming months to understand the full scope of how you'll be impacted. Without further ado, let's take a look at what's about to change.

Auto rental coverage

Your card's auto rental coverage is getting a bump. On products that don't already have a limit of $60,000 or more, coverage will include more vehicles and grant cardholders up to $60,000 in coverage for eligible vehicles with an MSRP of $125,000 or less. The notice period will also be extended from 60 to 100 days.

Emergency evacuation and transportation

If your card offers this benefit, Chase will upgrade it in October. The benefit's service provider will now arrange and provide for emergency transportation for qualifying events. In other words, cardholders will no longer need to pay upfront and then file a claim.

Travel and emergency assistance

Certain cards will soon be introduced to a travel and emergency assistance benefit. If you run into an issue while traveling, this benefit offers legal and medical referrals and access to other emergency services. However, service isn't free; cardholders are responsible for any services rendered.

Travel accident insurance

Cards with $250,000 worth of travel accident insurance will see an increase in coverage to $500,000.

Lost luggage reimbursement

Select products will receive a lost luggage reimbursement benefit for the first time. This perk reimburses the cost of repairing or replacing checked or carry-on luggage that is lost or damaged during a covered trip.

Extended warranty protection

On cards with coverage from $10,000 per claim and $50,000 for the life of the account, Chase will enhance the warranty protection on select cards to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per year.

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

This benefit update is unique to The New United Gateway℠ Card, which already offers trip cancellation and interruption insurance for the primary cardholder. Starting October 1, this benefit will cover additional family members and covered reasons.

Final Thoughts

Sure, an update on your card's emergency evacuation and transportation benefit isn't the most exciting thing in the world. However, the changes coming on October 1 give us a great opportunity to remind you that your credit card has several benefits that you might not know about and that you likely have more coverage while traveling than you think you do.

So, if you're a Chase cardholder, your benefits will be updated or upgraded on October 1, 2024. When you get your new Guide to Benefits, be sure to read through it for all the details.
