Possibly the most valuable rewards card you can add to your wallet, the Citi® Double Cash Card is an easy to understand, no-annual-fee rewards card earning 2% back on every purchase; 1% when you purchase, 1% when you pay. Citi recently unveiled an awesome new feature for the Citi Double Cash, allowing cardholders to convert the cash rewards earned with this card to ThankYou points at a 1:1 ratio. In practice, provided you hold a premium ThankYou Rewards earning card that charges an annual fee, you can now earn 2x ThankYou points per dollar on the Citi Double Cash.
If you're looking to pay down debt or finance a larger purchase, this card also comes with one of the best available introductory APR offers on balance transfers.
- 2% cash back on every purchase - 1% when you buy + 1% when you pay
- 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 18 months. After that, the (Variable) APR will be 15.49% – 25.49% based on your creditworthiness
- No annual fee
The card charges no annual fee and offers one of the best introductory APRs on balance transfers available here in the U.S. which we’ll expand on below.
The big sell point with this card is the ability to earn either 2% cash back on every purchase or 2x ThankYou points for every dollar spent. This makes the Citi Double Cash the best card you can get for everyday, non-bonus spending. Other cards like the Chase Freedom® can receive 5% cash back, but only on select categories that rotate every quarter.

While the Citi Double Cash is a high-earning rewards card without an annual fee, there are a few downsides which may impact your decision to apply. Chief among those is the lack of a signup bonus. Plenty of rewards cards with no annual fee feature signup bonuses as high as $500, so the absence of a signup offer outside of the intro balance transfer rate is disappointing. The card also charges a 3% foreign transaction fee, meaning it’s no good for purchases overseas. The $25 minimum redemption for cash back, which equates to $1,250 spent on the card, is often cited as another downside. But, we don’t see it as any roadblock to getting the card, particularly now that you can convert as little as $1 worth of cash rewards to 100 ThankYou points.
Citi® Double Cash Card Signup Bonus
The Citi Double Cash doesn’t offer a signup bonus in the traditional sense. Instead, new cardmembers can take advantage of an extended intro 0% APR on balance transfers for 18 months (then a (Variable) rate of 15.49% – 25.49%).
Earn 2% Cash Back With the Citi® Double Cash Card
There are very few rewards cards that make earning rewards this simple. No bonus categories to think about, and you don’t need to hold any other cards or transfer points to get the most value from your rewards. Simply swipe your card for any purchase, in any category, and earn 2% cash back on your purchase. You receive 1% back when you make the purchase, and another 1% back when you pay. There are no limits on the amount of cash back you can earn. However, it’s important to note that your rewards will expire if you don’t earn any cash back on purchases or payments for at least 12 months.
Earn 2x ThankYou Rewards Points Per Dollar
Citi announced some big changes to the Citi Double Cash in September 2019, including the ability to convert cash rewards points earned on the card to ThankYou points at a 1:1 ratio. So every $1 worth of cash back rewards you have in your Citi Double Cash account is now worth 100 ThankYou points. If you also hold either a Citi Premier℠ Card, Citi Prestige® Card, or Citi Chairman® Card, you can then combine your points into a single account, and transfer them to any of Citi's airline travel partners including Avianca LifeMiles, Etihad Guest, Singapore KrisFlyer, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. The capacity to earn 2x ThankYou points on non-bonus purchases has catapulted the Citi Double Cash into the top spot as the most lucrative rewards card for everyday spending.
Redeeming Citi® Double Cash Card Rewards
You can convert your cash rewards to airline miles with as little as $1 in your account, or redeem them for cash back with a minimum $25 in your cashback account. You can get cash back rewards in the form of statement credits or having a check mailed to you. Gift cards are also an option for a wide variety of retail locations and restaurants, but unless you plan on giving the gift cards to a friend or family member as a gift, why lock yourself into one retailer when you can get straight cash back?. There is no complicated redemption process, no special portals, and no special requirements; just go to your online account and select “Redeem Rewards” to get your cash back.
Citi® Double Cash Card redemption options include:
- Convert cash rewards to ThankYou points at a 1:1 ratio
- Gift cards from a variety of retailers
- Get a statement credit on your card account
- Direct deposit into your bank account (Citi or another bank)
- Receive a check in the mail
Citi® Double Cash Card Retail Benefits
Update: Unfortunately, Citi recently announced dramatic changes to retail and travel benefits that take effect on September 22, 2019. This includes the removal of almost all travel and purchase protections and it affects almost all Citi cards, including the Citi Double Cash. See our comprehensive post covering the changes.
Following the September changes, the Citi Double Cash has become one of the most profitable rewards cards available for everyday spending. Earn a base 2% back on every purchase, an excellent benchmark for the rest of your rewards card portfolio, or you can transfer cash rewards to ThankYou points at a 1:1 ratio. When you can get a minimum 2% back on any purchase, every day of the week, there is no reason ever to swipe a card that returns less than 2%. And you won’t pay an annual fee to hold this card.
If you’re a seasoned points and miles fan, comfortable analyzing different loyalty programs and transferring rewards between them to maximize the value of your points, this card becomes your fall-back card, pulled out when there are no bonus categories to be had. If you like to keep your rewards game casual and enjoy working a simple cash back strategy, the Citi Double Cash is a stellar option to add to your wallet.
