Airline and hotel loyalty programs are working to make life easier for elite members during these tough travel times. And Hilton is no exception. In March, Hilton Honors extended elite status through March 31, 2022. Now, Hilton Honors is updating policies around Elite Rollover Nights. The new changes will help elite members secure—or upgrade—their elite status through March 31, 2023!

How it Works

Typically, Hilton Honors members can rollover “unused” elite nights to count toward qualifying for status in the next year. For example, Hilton Honors members achieve Silver status after 10 qualifying nights. So, if you stayed at Hilton properties 15 qualifying nights in 2019, you would have earned Hilton Honors Silver status. In addition, you'd have rolled over 5 nights to jumpstart your qualification process for 2020.

Hilton Honors' new policy around Elite Rollover Nights allows members to count all 2020 qualifying nights earned in 2020 towards qualifying for 2021 status. So if you stay 15 qualifying nights in 2020, you will earn Hilton Honors Silver status, and you will start 2021 with 15 elite nights for status qualification.

In effect, Hilton is allowing elite members to maintain their existing status as well as giving all members a chance to elevate their elite tier status in 2021.

Hilton Honors Rollover Night Changes

This change to Elite Rollover Nights is currently valid for stays completed during the calendar year 2020: January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020.

Elite Rollover Nights are typically only available to Hilton Honors Elites at the Silver, Gold, and Diamond Levels. That means that Hilton Honors Members with fewer than 10 qualifying nights aren't typically able to rollover elite nights. That's changing for 2020. According to the Hilton Honors Updates page:

“UPDATE: For 2020, ALL Members will be eligible to roll over all nights earned from stays in 2020.”

This is great news for those travelers who may be new to Hilton or those who may not have quite reached that 10-night threshold for Silver tier status. If you complete any qualifying stays in 2020, you could be well on your way to securing Silver elite status in 2021. As you can see below, Silver tier status comes with some nice perks, like 20% Bonus Points on stays. If you are in a position where you can elevate your status with the help of this update, even better!

Alternatively, if you earn 15 elite nights in 2020, you'll need just 25 more in 2021 to earn Gold status. That will score you free continental breakfast, space-available room upgrades, and 80% bonus points through March 31, 2023.

Hilton's top tier Diamond elite status requires 60 elite-qualifying nights. That might be too much for many travelers to get in one year. However, you might be able to accumulate 60 nights between 2020 and 2021. Alternatively, you can shortcut the whole process and just get the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card—which grants cardmembers Diamond elite status as a benefit of holding the card.

Our Take

Hilton Honors has been right in the mix with a lot of the big travel brands that are working to keep customers happy, even when travel is way down.

Earlier this year Hilton Honors announced that it was suspending the expiration of points and offering increased flexibility around new and existing reservations. This latest update to the Honors program is great news for those travelers who have been sticking close to home. It also gives us something to look forward to next year!

We sure do hope that travel gets easier sooner rather than later. At this point, we would be happy to earn our status the old fashioned way! That said, as the pandemic continues, we won't be surprised if this policy or others like it stretch into 2021.

Will you take advantage of rollover elite nights to reach or elevate your Hilton elite tier status?

  • Class move by Hilton. I hope that the other major hotel chains are taking notice. Still hoping that IHG and Marriott extend their free night awards past the end of the year.

  • Good news for those that had stays or can continue to travel. Still easier to just get a credit card for the status.

  • This can certainly be useful to folks trying to maintain qualification for 2022. However, atleast for US based folks, it might just be easier to get the Aspire card and get the status.

  • Farid Kassam says:

They probably will extend the expiration for unused points.

  • Nova Jeniffer says:

As i remember Marriott have been roll over membership to 2022 and have give us half of keep level night this year. Marriott and Hilton is the most love hotel group for me. Great change and big thanks.

  • I think everything will be put on hold until 31 December 2021.

  • I definitely appreciate Hilton’s gesture, but I hope they will extend the expiration of the points soon.

    • I would venture to guess they will. But signing up for a free Amex is super easy and convenient too.

      • All these such program decisions, these extensions, are understandably being made as late as possible. Just like all of us, the hotels and airlines are hoping for the best and hoping that it arrives sooner rather than later. So, I’m still not really holding delayed decisions against them at this point.

  • It seems like Hilton is one hotel program that is looking out for its customers during this pandemic as well as trying to keep people loyal to the program. I definitely applaud all of their recent moves.

  • Will they delay the the expiration date of the points again?

  • Wow. That’s pretty cool. It’s exciting seeing what all the travel companies are doing to entice travelers now that travelers aren’t traveling.

  • Steven William Van Meter says:

I’ve flirted with Hilton honors over the years but I always quit due to excessive spam email and the fact that they didnt offer free wifi

    • Hilton Honors Amex is a win-win. Free card with free points and free silver status. Hit the minimum spend and just look for an occasional offer.

    • @SWVM – I have no idea why you keep complaining about getting emails from HH. I get emails from them, but certainly **not any more** than from any other loyalty program.

  • This is why I’m moving all my future stays this year to Hilton. I’ve achieved Marriott Titanium and there’s no way I’ll make Ambassador so i May as well take advantage of this Hilton Offer.
