For years, American Express has partnered with Uber to deliver Uber Cash to cardholders' accounts each month if you hold the right credit card. Maximizing this benefit can help you save on that next ride to the airport or food delivery to your hotel. Let's dig into how to use Uber Cash if you have a American Express Platinum Card® or American Express® Gold Card.
What is Uber Cash?
According to Uber, Uber Cash is a currency that can be used to pay for “whatever you find on the app.” Once just a rideshare platform, Uber has expanded its offering to include food delivery, courier services, grocery shopping, and more.
Uber Cash can be loaded onto the app from an Uber gift card, a one-time credit card payment, or as a service recovery when things go wrong using the service. Additionally, Uber Cash can be delivered monthly as a benefit for holding certain American Express credit cards. If you have a personal Platinum Card® or Amex Gold, you'll want to pay attention, as you'll need to add your Amex card to the Uber app to get the credits each month.
How to Add Your Amex Card to the Uber App
If you haven't downloaded the Uber app already, you'll need to do so and create an account. Once you've done so, navigate to “Account” in the bottom right-hand corner and select “Partner Rewards” from the menu that appears.

There will be a list of promotions in the form of tiles available to link to your account. Find the appropriate tile for your Amex card and click on it. Then, select “Add Card.” A screen will appear to add your card number, expiration date, CVV, and zip code. Once that's been added, the Uber Cash will appear in your account automatically on the first of each month.
Importantly, you must go through these steps before you receive any Uber Cash from Amex. The perk isn't delivered as a statement credit, like other Amex benefits.
Platinum Card® Uber Cash Benefit
Depending on the card that you hold, the amount of Uber cash you receive each month will differ. For holders of the Platinum Card® card, you'll receive $15 in Uber credit each month. In December, you'll $35 in Uber Cash, for a total of $200 in credit each year.
Uber Cash earned from Amex cards are “use-it-or-lose-it” each month. That means that if you fail to use your credit during the calendar month, it won't roll over to the next month. As we mentioned earlier in the post, Uber Cash is usable on anything in the Uber app, including food delivery, so remember to use it before the end of the month!

A new benefit for the Platinum Card® card this year is an Uber One membership. You'll want to activate this perk as well in the Uber app, as it'll help you save on delivery fees, up to 10% Uber Cash back on eligible Uber rides, and priority access to top-rated drivers.
Amex Gold Uber Cash Benefit
Similar to the Platinum Card® card, Amex Gold cardmembers will receive Uber Cash at the beginning of each calendar month. However, the Amex Gold‘s benefit is smaller than the Platinum Card®‘s, at $10 Uber Cash per month.

The Uber Cash earned from this benefit also expires at the end of each month and can be used to pay for anything in the Uber app. Unused Uber Cash doesn't roll over to the next month, so use it — or lose it.
The Amex Gold does not offer an Uber One benefit like the Platinum Card®.
Uber Cash Caveats
There are a few things for readers to understand about Uber Cash. For one, Uber Cash is only available for use in the United States and its territories. If you're traveling overseas and using the Uber app, you won't be able to use Uber Cash to pay for rides or anything else in the app. This is important to know for those taking longer trips abroad or who are leaving before the end of the current month. Use your Uber Cash before you depart, if you can!
If you don't have enough Uber Cash to cover the payment for a service in the Uber app, your preferred method of payment covers the balance. Additionally, there are claims that Uber charges more when you're using Uber Cash earned from your Amex card.
Our Take
Uber Cash is a great benefit of the Platinum Card® and Amex Gold cards. My family uses them for a splurge meal delivered to the home each month, if we don't have a use for Uber's rideshare service in a particular month. Remember to add your card before you pay for your next Uber ride, and to use the full credit each month before it expires.
