Update: Marriott announced in late April 2025 that it would acquire CitizenM. Shortly after this announcement, CitizenM closed status match applications and hasn't reopened them. We will update this post if they do.
CitizenM is a little-talked-about hotel brand with nearly 40 properties peppered across major U.S. and European cities (plus a couple more in the Asia Pacific region). The brand has offered a long-running status match campaign, which grants eligible applicants complimentary mycitizenM+ status for one year. Completing a free match can mean discounts, hotel perks, and more.
Here's how and why you might want to match your hotel and airline status to mycitizenM.

What Is citizenM?
CitizenM is a relatively new Dutch-based hotel brand founded in 2005. It provides affordable locations to stay, relax, and work in some of the world’s best cities. And it does this by cutting out many of the additional services hotels offer that people don’t need or don’t want to pay for.
As of publishing, CitizenM offers 16 locations in North America across the following cities:

Overview of the mycitizenM Loyalty Program
Part of what separates citizenM from traditional hotel brands like Hilton or Marriott is how it runs its mycitizenM loyalty program. The program has two tiers: a general member level (mycitizenM) and a paid level (mycitizenM+).
The general member level offers simple perks, such as a best price guarantee, exclusive member deals, and full use of the citizenM app.
The tier above the general level is more interesting because you can't earn it via completing a certain number of stays. You pay for it annually. Or, if you take advantage of the active status match campaign, you can get a year's worth of the following perks for free:
- 15% off all stays.
- Free welcome drink with all app bookings.
- Free late check-out at 2 pm.
- Free premium view (at hotels with premium view).
- 15% off food and drink (except breakfast).
- Guaranteed room (48-hours notice).
- 15% off meeting rooms.
- Access to free-to-use co-working spaces.
- Early access to member sales.
Ordinarily, a mycitizenM+ membership costs $120, £90, or €100 upfront for a year.
How To Get a Complimentary Year of mycitizenM+ Perks via Status Match
Before paying for the perks of mycitizenM+, it's worth taking them for a test drive. You can do so by matching virtually any hotel or airline elite status to mycitizenM. Applying is free, and if you successfully match, you'll enjoy all the perks of mycitizenM+ for 12 months. Click here to visit the application page.

Once you fill out an application and provide proof of your airline or hotel elite status, you'll know within three business days if you were approved. If you were successful, you'll receive a promo code via email to enter into the “promotion code” box on the mycitizenM+ sign-up webpage. This code will discount the cost of a 12-month membership to $0.
Do note that you'll have to enter your credit card details no matter what. After your trial year ends, citizenM will charge your card for the cost of a second year of perks unless you cancel.
This promotion does not have an end date. However, the sponsor (Loyalty Status Co.) reserves the right to withdraw the offer at any time.

Our Take
CitizenM is a small, quirky hotel brand with a small international footprint. However, if you plan to visit some of the cities where you can find a property and feel encouraged to book a stay, it's worth status matching to the mycitizenM program for elite-like perks.
If you complete a match, it's a good idea to set a calendar reminder close to a year after your mycitizenM+ status takes effect. You should use this opportunity to evaluate whether or not to commit to a paid year, as citizenM will charge your card for the cost of a membership at the 12-month mark. If the perks aren't worth it, cancel. If they are, rest assured your membership will stay on autopilot.
