Air Canada has just joined the lengthy list of airlines to offer members the ability to earn points or miles on Hertz car rentals. Elite members will also be able to enroll in Hertz elite status and earn bonus points on bookings. Air Canada might not be the first airline to partner with Hertz, nor will it be the last. However, if you're eyeing a Star Alliance redemption, you might want to credit your next rental to Aeroplan.

Here's what you should know about the new partnership between Air Canada and Hertz.

Everything to Know About the Air Canada and Hertz Partnership

Air Canada has just announced a partnership with Hertz, allowing members to earn Aeroplan points on car rentals. More ways to earn points are always a good thing, especially when it's with one of the biggest car rental companies in the world.

Here's how many Aeroplan points you'll earn per $1 spent on Hertz car rentals:

  • Aeroplan members: 2 points
  • Aeroplan Elite 25K, 35K, and 50K members: 3 points
  • Aeroplan Elite 75K members: 4 points
  • Aeroplan Super Elite members: 5 points

All members, regardless of status, will also earn 2 points per $1 spent on rentals with Dollar and Thrifty. To earn points, you can either add your Aeroplan number to your Hertz profile and set it as your preferred frequent traveler program or add your Aeroplan number whenever you book your rental.

In addition, you'll receive 1 Status Qualifying Credit (SQC) for every 5 Aeroplan points you earn on car rentals. As a reminder, you need 25,000 SQCs to reach base-tier Aeroplan 25K status, so you likely won't reach status primarily through car rentals. However, it's a great way to boost your earnings beyond flying.

If you already hold Aeroplan elite status, you can status match into the Hertz Gold Plus program:

  • Aeroplan Elite 25K, 35K, and 50K members, as well as Aeroplan Core Credit Cardholders, will receive complimentary Five Star status
  • Aeroplan Elite 75K and Super Elite members, and Aeroplan Premium Credit Cardholders, will receive complimentary President’s Circle status

Air Canada offers just one credit card for U.S. residents — the Aeroplan® Credit Card (Rates & Fees) — which falls into the “core” card category. However, if you're in Canada and hold a premium credit card, you are now eligible to receive top-tier President's Circle status.

It's surprising that Air Canada and Hertz didn't already have a partnership. You can earn a variety of points and miles on Hertz car rentals, from Avianca LifeMiles to Marriott Bonvoy points. Now, you can also earn Aeroplan points on your rental, and elite members can take advantage of an elite status match.

If you want to boost your Aeroplan balance ahead of a redemption and you frequently rent cars with Hertz, make sure to add your Aeroplan membership number to your Hertz profile.
