American Airlines AAdvantage Mid-Year Updates: More Loyalty Point Reward Options, New Ways To Use Your Miles, and More

If you feel like we've talked a lot about American Airlines this week, that's because we have. On August 3, Citi and American Airlines announced a refresh of the Citi^® / AAdvantage^® Executive World Elite Mastercard^® and an increase in Admirals Club^® membership fees.

And on August 6, American released its 2026 mid-year AAdvantage^® update. The most notable news was that elite members will no longer get business class upgrades on domestic routes served by aircraft with three cabins (economy, premium economy, and business).

However, there are a few more things from the mid-year update to run through, although the majority of them are frustratingly vague. Here's what to know.

2026 Mid-Year AAdvantage Update

American Airlines has released a variety of mid-year AAdvantage updates, but most of them don't include enough details to form an opinion on. And a lot of these “new” updates we already knew about.

Here's a quick overview of changes to the AAdvantage program in the coming months:

• Book flights with cash and miles: You'll soon be able to use a combination of cash and miles to book mainland U.S. flights (excluding Alaska and Hawaii). However, it's hard to know whether this will be a good value. Some programs, like Oneworld partner British Airways, offer fantastic redemption rates when using a combination of cash and miles. However, most U.S. airlines offer a maximum redemption of 1¢ per mile when selecting this option.
• Stream FOX One on board: When you connect to in-flight Wi-Fi on domestic flights, you'll receive a 24-hour pass to FOX One, up to seven times per year.
• Free Wi-Fi on more flights: Wi-Fi powered by AT&T is available on more domestic flights and select international flights, free for AAdvantage members. We aren't sure exactly what “more” means in this context, but American says it offers connectivity on more planes than any other U.S. carrier. That said, this isn't super meaningful until American rolls out Starlink in 2027.
• New gifts for Million Miler members: Later this year, Million Miler members will receive new benefits. Instead of set rewards, you'll be able to choose from a variety of options, including bonus Loyalty Points, a gift of AAdvantage status, Systemwide Upgrades, bonus miles, and more.
• New Loyalty Point rewards: In-flight food and beverage coupons are now available for selection when you earn 15,000 Loyalty Points. A 12-month New York Times subscription is coming soon at select milestones.
• MaximizeMiles with American Airlines Vacations: For a limited time, you can earn up to 11 miles and Loyalty Points per $1 spent on an American Airlines Vacations package.

As you can see, these updates are vague at best.

Being able to use a combination of cash and miles for flights is likely a long time coming. Until it officially rolls out, we won't know whether this is a lucrative option or simply a way to save miles that are about to expire. Similarly, the new gifts for Million Miler members might be valuable, but they might not.

It's interesting to see the other updates included here. We found out about the FOX One partnership in June ahead of the World Cup, and we covered that in-flight food and beverage coupons and New York Times subscriptions would be available as Loyalty Point reward choices back in March. We also found out about the opportunity to earn up to 11 miles and Loyalty Points per $1 on American Airlines Vacation packages in July.

Bottom Line

Although packaged as updates, we already knew about the vast majority of these AAdvantage changes. And for the new updates, we don't really know much. We don't have a timeline on when members will be able to use a combination of cash and miles to book their flight — or what the value will be. We also don't know what the new Million Miler choices will be.

These updates were likely framed to make the changes to complimentary upgrades feel less jarring. Ultimately, there's a mix of good and bad here, so we will need to wait and see how things develop before drawing any conclusions.
