Over a decade ago, I had a trip planned to New York City for my bachelorette party. I was going to stay at the famed Waldorf Astoria in Midtown Manhattan, a hotel that, as a native New Yorker, had always loomed larger than life.
Let’s just say, things did not go as planned. It turned out that my sister-in-law and I each thought the other had booked the room, and neither of us actually had. I vowed I’d get back there and actually spend a night at the Waldorf Astoria someday.
When it closed in 2017, I thought I’d missed my chance. But eight years later, the Waldorf Astoria finally reopened after a massive renovation that transformed the former 1,400-room behemoth into a comparatively intimate 375-room hotel, with much of the building converted into luxury residences. Suddenly I had another shot at finally staying at the iconic hotel. Even better, I wasn’t going to pay the eye-watering cash rate. I was going to stay for free using a Hilton free night reward.
Here’s how I earned the reward, found award availability at the Waldorf Astoria, and used one free night for a bucket-list stay worth more than $1,000.
How I Earned My Hilton Free Night Reward
One of my favorite benefits of the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card is the ability to earn a Hilton Free Night Reward after spending $15,000 on eligible purchases on the card in a calendar year.
Now, $15,000 is a decent chunk of spending to deliberately put on one card, especially when I’m usually working toward other credit card welcome bonuses. But I knew I could get outsized value from the reward, so I decided it was worth prioritizing.
I knocked out a large portion of the spending requirement by putting our property taxes on the Hilton Surpass, then added some of our regular everyday spending until I crossed the $15,000 threshold. That earned me the Free Night Reward that would eventually get me into the Waldorf Astoria New York.

How I Locked in the Stay
There was just one problem: Hilton Free Night Rewards can only be redeemed when a standard room reward is available, and there wasn’t any standard award availability for the night we needed.
Rather than gamble on something opening up, I booked the Conrad New York Downtown as a backup. It was a perfectly good Plan B, but I wasn’t quite ready to give up on the Waldorf. I set an alert through Rooms.aero to notify me if a standard room became available for our date.
Sure enough, about three months before our trip, I got a text alert that availability had opened. Hilton Free Night Rewards have to be redeemed by phone (or chat), so I immediately called Hilton and booked the room before the standard award availability disappeared again.
Checking In at the Waldorf Astoria New York
Things got even better as our stay approached. The night before check-in, I messaged the hotel to ask whether an upgrade might be available. I have mid-tier Hilton Honors™ Gold Status, but they happily obliged, upgrading us from the standard room I had booked into a junior suite.
When we arrived at the hotel, we were warmly greeted at the front door by one of their “door ambassadors,” James, who whisked us toward the front desk while giving us a brief tour of the main floor along the way. I was immediately struck by the elegance of the renovated interior. It felt fresh and modern without sacrificing the grandeur and history that make the Waldorf Astoria such an iconic New York hotel.
Our room wasn’t quite ready when we arrived, so we left our bags and headed out to explore the city. Before sending us on our way, the staff offered lunch recommendations and gave us refillable water bottles to take with us.
When our room was ready, James brought our luggage upstairs, arranged it in the walk-in closet, and gave us a tour of the suite, including a demonstration of the in-room iPad and automatic blinds.
Hilton Honors Benefits
In addition to the wonderful upgrade to a junior suite, we arrived to find a beautiful display of treats waiting for us in the room, including Waldorf Astoria chocolates, fruit jellies, a cake bite, and fresh fruit.
My selected Hilton Gold My Way benefit is the daily food and beverage credit. At Waldorf Astoria properties in the U.S., eligible Gold members receive a $25 daily credit for themselves and one additional registered guest, giving us $50 to spend at the hotel's restaurants and bars.
Since my kids had their hearts set on going out to get bagels for breakfast, we decided to use the credit for late-night dessert instead at the gorgeous Peacock Alley lobby lounge. Hot tip: get the warm Dulcey Toffee Cookie. You will not regret it.
We were also able to stretch our stay a little longer with a requested late checkout, giving us a couple of extra hours to enjoy the hotel before heading out.
Worth the Wait
After wanting to stay at the Waldorf Astoria for more than a decade, I was a little worried that I had built it up too much in my head. Thankfully, it lived up to the anticipation.
Our junior suite felt luxurious in all the ways that matter. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the sheets were fantastic, and plush robes were waiting for us in the room. The bathroom was especially impressive, with sleek modern finishes, a Japanese-style toilet, and a deep soaking tub. Everything felt thoughtfully appointed and unmistakably luxe.
The hotel’s public spaces were just as impressive. The lobby was grand and beautiful, with the kind of scale and elegance you expect from the Waldorf.
What stood out most, however, was the service. From the moment we arrived, the staff made the experience feel remarkably personal. James, the door ambassador who greeted us on arrival, was a perfect example. He remembered our names and chatted with us each time we saw him as though we were old friends.
Incredibly, we even ran into him later in a subway station downtown. He immediately called out to us, stopped to chat, and took a photo with us. It was such an unexpected moment, and one that really captured just how personal the service at the Waldorf felt.
I’ve stayed at plenty of luxury hotels over the years, but I honestly can’t remember another stay where the service felt quite this exceptional. Between the beautifully appointed room, the grand surroundings, and the personal attention, the Waldorf Astoria absolutely felt worth the wait.
The Value of Our Free Night
But was the Waldorf Astoria worth a Free Night Reward?
Hilton Free Night Rewards are particularly valuable because they aren’t capped at a certain number of points. As long as a standard room reward is available, you can use one for a standard accommodation at almost any property in the Hilton portfolio. That opens the door to some seriously aspirational Hilton redemptions.
Hilton fans often use these rewards at properties like the Waldorf Astoria Maldives, Conrad Bora Bora Nui, and Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, where a single night can easily cost well over $1,000.
However, using a single Free Night Reward at a resort comes with a practical challenge. One night at an incredible beach property sounds great, but unless you have additional certificates or plenty of Hilton points, you still have to figure out how to pay for the rest of the stay.
The Waldorf worked perfectly for us because we were only planning to spend one night in New York City anyway. A standard room for our night was selling for around $1,300, while the junior suite we ultimately received was going for about $1,800, making this a great use of our certificate. I had wanted to stay at the Waldorf for more than a decade, and now I could finally do it while getting exactly the kind of outsized value I had hoped for when I earned the certificate in the first place. For me, there really wasn’t a better place to use it.
Final Thoughts
More than a decade after I first planned to spend a night at the Waldorf Astoria, I finally made it there. After all that time, plus an eight-year closure and massive renovation, I was worried the experience might not live up to what I had imagined.
It did.
Using a Hilton Free Night Reward for a stay that would have cost around $1,300, and ultimately being upgraded to a suite selling for about $1,800, made the redemption objectively valuable. But getting to finally stay at a hotel I had wanted to experience for years made it even better. This time, I made absolutely sure I had a reservation.
